The Confrontation In The Hallway

Mark: You can't kick me out! I am the father of both of these boys!

Sarah: You abandoned Toby seven years ago! You gave up your legal parental rights when you signed those agency papers!

Mark: I can contest that in court! I have rights to this family!

Nurse Clara: Sir, I witnessed you strike your wife in this room two minutes ago.

Mark froze, turning his head slowly to look at Nurse Clara, who was already pressing the emergency security button near the door frame.

Mark: You stay out of this, nurse! This is a private family matter!

Nurse Clara: Domestic violence on hospital property is a felony, Mr. Miller. Hospital security and the police are already on their way up to this floor.

Mark: Sarah, tell her to cancel the call! If I get arrested, my company goes under! We'll lose the house!

Sarah: Let it burn, Mark. I don't care about your company or your house.

Mark: You're destroying our lives over a mistake from seven years ago!

Toby: It wasn't a mistake, Dad. You told Grandma you hated me because I was weak.

Toby pulled a small cassette recorder from his backpack and pressed the black play button on the side.

A coarse, grainy recording of Mark's voice echoed loudly through the quiet hospital room.

Mark's Recorded Voice: "I don't care where you take the kid, Mom. Just make sure Sarah thinks he died in the delivery room. I'm not wasting my life insurance payout raising a crippled baby."

Sarah covered her mouth as the recording stopped, her eyes wide with disgust.

Sarah: Life insurance...? You took out a life insurance policy on our newborn son?

Toby: Grandma kept all the tapes, Dad. She recorded every phone call you made to her when you asked for money to keep quiet.

Mark: Turn that off! Give me that tape right now!

Mark lunged forward to grab the recorder from Toby's hands, but two tall hospital security guards burst into the room, tackling Mark to the floor and pinning his arms behind his back.

Security Guard 1: Down on the ground! Do not move!

Mark: Get off me! That kid stole my property!

Security Guard 2: Ma'am, are you okay? We received a domestic disturbance call from the head nurse.

Sarah: I want to press charges. For assault, for child abandonment, and for insurance fraud.

Mark: Sarah, please! Think about the family name! Think about my reputation!

Sarah: You don't have a family anymore, Mark. You sold it seven years ago.

The security guards hauled Mark up from the floor, snapping silver handcuffs tightly around his wrists before leading him down the hallway in front of staring doctors and patients.

Toby watched his father get dragged away, his face remaining completely calm as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his grandmother's old silver key.

Toby: Mom... Grandma left something else for you before she passed away last week.

Sarah: What is it, sweetie?

Toby: The key to her house in the country. And the deed to the farm. She put both of our names on it so Mark could never take it away.
