The Truth Behind The Glass

Mark: You're lying. My son died in the hospital seven years ago.

Toby: You told Mom I died! But Grandma took me away and hid me so you wouldn't give me away to strangers!

Sarah: Mark... what is he talking about? You told me our firstborn baby had a heart defect and didn't survive the night!

Mark: Sarah, don't listen to this crazy kid! He's trying to scam us!

Sarah: Look at his face, Mark! He has your exact eyes and my mother's curly hair!

Toby: You signed the relinquishment papers at the county building, Dad. Grandma kept the duplicate copy in her bible.

Mark's face went completely white as he backed up against the glass window separating the room from the hallway.

Sarah: You lied to me for seven years?! You told me my baby died while I was asleep after surgery?!

Mark: We didn't have any money, Sarah! The medical bills for his special heart condition would have bankrupted us before we even bought a house!

Sarah: You monster! You gave away my child because of money?!

Mark: I did it to save our future! I did it for us!

Sarah: I hate you! I wish I had left you years ago!

Sarah lunged at Mark, her fists hammering against his chest as she sobbed uncontrollably.

Mark: Get off me!

In a sudden flash of rage and panic, Mark raised his open hand and struck Sarah hard across the side of her face.

The slap cracked through the room like a gunshot. Sarah stumbled backward, crashing against the side table before sliding down onto the floor, holding her burning red cheek.

Toby: Stop hitting her!

Toby rushed straight past Mark, ignoring his father's outstretched arms, and ran directly to the incubator in the center of the room.

Inside the clear box, baby Leo's tiny chest gave one violent shudder before stopping completely.

The heart monitor screen glitched, the rhythmic green spikes turning into a straight, solid horizontal line.

A piercing continuous alarm tone filled the small hospital room, ringing loudly against the glass walls.

Mark: Oh god... he's flatlining! Call the nurse! Someone call the nurse!

Sarah: Leo! No, please, baby Leo!

Toby: Move out of the way!

Toby unzipped the side rubber sleeve of the incubator and slipped his right hand inside, reaching through the tangle of plastic monitor tubes.

Mark: Don't touch him, kid! You're going to contaminate the environment!

Toby: I'm not going to hurt him, Dad. I'm fixing what you broke.

Toby placed his palm firmly over the baby's tiny chest, right over his sleeping heart.

He closed his eyes, his breathing slowing down as a calm, focused expression washed over his young face.

Sarah: What is he doing, Mark? Why isn't the alarm stopping?

Mark: Kid, pull your hand out of there right now before I drag you out!

Toby: Stay back. He's breathing.
