Mark scrambled to his feet holding the diamond ring, his hair messy and his tuxedo jacket ruined with dust from the floor. He rushed over to Clara, grabbing her shoulders with frantic energy as he tried to force her to look at him. His voice was desperate, breaking with loud hitches as he realized his entire future had just slipped through his fingers in a matter of minutes. The remaining party guests were already leaving the hall in groups, talking animatedly about the scandal they had just witnessed.
Mark: Call them back, Clara! Call the manager right now and tell them it was a mistake!
Clara: It wasn't a mistake, Mark. It was the easiest decision I have ever made in my entire life.
Mark: You ruined my life! I had everything lined up! A great career, a rich wife, a mansion! You ruined it all!
Clara: You ruined it yourself the moment you put your hands on me to impress people who don't care about you.
Mark: I'm your brother! You're supposed to support me no matter what!
Clara: Support isn't abuse, Mark. I am done letting you use me as a doormat.
Clara pulled out the small velvet box from her purse and held it out toward him. Mark stared at the box, his hands shaking as he recognized his mother's prized possession. Clara opened the lid, revealing the shimmering vintage pearl necklace resting against the black velvet lining. The pearls caught the bright ceiling lights, glowing with a soft elegance that reminded Clara of the happy home they used to have before greed consumed her younger brother.
Clara: Mother wanted you to have this when you found true love. But you don't know what love is.
Mark: Give it to me. That belongs to the family.
Clara: No, Mark. This belongs to someone who respects our family's memory. And that isn't you.
Clara snapped the velvet box shut with a sharp click and placed it securely back inside her bag. Mark reached out to snatch it, but the venue manager stepped between them, accompanied by two large security guards wearing sharp dark suits. The manager looked at Mark with deep disapproval, holding a clipboard that contained the event contract Clara had signed weeks ago. He motioned for the security officers to take a step forward, cutting off Mark's path completely.
Venue Manager: Sir, the owner of the contract has officially canceled this event. You need to leave the premises immediately.
Mark: This is my party! My name is on the welcome sign outside!
Venue Manager: The contract is under Miss Clara's name. You are currently trespassing on private property, sir.
Mark looked around the massive, emptying hall, realizing that he had no legal right to stay there any longer. The catering staff had already stopped serving drinks and were clearing away the untouched food trays. His friends had all vanished, unwilling to be associated with someone who had hit his sister in public. Mark collapsed onto a nearby chair, burying his face in his hands as loud, heavy sobs shook his shoulders.
