The Cost of Betrayal

Slapped at the Gala She Secretly Paid to Host

Mark's face turned completely pale as the full reality of Clara's words sank into his mind. He reached out to grab her wrist again, but Clara stepped back gracefully, out of his reach. The guests were now whispering loudly among themselves, pointing at Mark with expressions of disgust and pity. Evelyn stepped forward from the crowd, her expensive silk gown rustling as she hurried toward her fiance with a confused and angry look on her face. Her father followed closely behind her, his thick gray eyebrows drawn down in a stern glare that made Mark shudder with fear.

Evelyn: Mark, what is she talking about? What did she mean she paid for our wedding?

Mark: Evelyn, honey, please don't listen to her. She's just crazy. She's trying to ruin our special night!

Clara: I have the receipts right here on my phone, Evelyn. Every single installment payment for this event hall came directly from my personal bank account.

Evelyn: You told me your family owned a lucrative real estate firm, Mark! You told my father you paid for everything yourself!

Clara: My brother works as an entry-level clerk. He couldn't even afford his own apartment rent without my help last year.

Mark felt as if the entire world was crumbling down on top of him while he stood in the center of the bright room. Evelyn's father stopped right in front of Mark, staring down at him with cold, calculating eyes. As a senior partner at a major city law firm, he despised liars above everything else. He looked at Clara's red, swollen cheek, then looked at Mark's guilty, sweating face, easily piecing together the truth of what had just occurred. The ambient silence returned as everyone waited to hear what the powerful man would say.

Evelyn's Father: Is this true, Mark? Did you hit your own sister after she paid for your party?

Mark: Sir, please let me explain! It was an accident! She provoked me!

Evelyn's Father: There is never an excuse to lay a hand on a woman, let alone the sister who sacrificed her own life to support you.

Evelyn: I can't believe I almost married a liar and a monster. We are completely finished, Mark.

Evelyn pulled off her stunning diamond engagement ring and threw it directly at Mark's chest. The heavy ring bounced off his tuxedo lapel and clattered loudly against the oak floor, rolling to a stop near Clara's shoes. Mark dropped to his knees, frantically searching the floor for the expensive ring while begging Evelyn to reconsider. But Evelyn turned her back on him without a second thought, walking away toward the exit alongside her father, who gave Mark one final look of total contempt.

Clara stood tall, watching her brother crawl on the floor like a desperate child. The humiliation Mark had tried to inflict on her had turned around and destroyed him completely in front of the very people he wished to impress. Clara picked up her purse from the nearby table, feeling a strange sense of clarity wash over her heart. She realized that trying to buy her brother's love and respect had been a foolish mistake all along.
