The Unwanted Sister's Invitation

Slapped at the Gala She Secretly Paid to Host

Clara smoothed down the fabric of her beige satin dress, standing just outside the heavy double doors of the Grand American Event Hall. She could hear the soft hum of the string quartet playing inside, mixed with the cheerful laughter of well-dressed guests. Her younger brother, Mark, was holding his engagement party tonight, an extravagant affair that had been talked about for months. Clara checked her purse one last time to make sure she had the small velvet box containing their late mother's vintage pearl necklace, the item Mark had begged her to bring for his fiancee, Evelyn. She smiled softly, remembering how much their mother had loved that piece of jewelry, and pushed open the doors to enter the hall.

The room was breathtaking, filled with rich hardwood oak floors, bright recessed lights, and grand white crown molding surrounding framed classic American paintings. Dozens of guests walked around carrying glasses of expensive champagne, admiring the floral arrangements that lined every polished table. Clara took a step forward, looking around the bright venue to find her brother among the crowd. She felt a bit out of place in her simple satin dress, but she felt happy knowing she was supporting Mark on his big night. She walked past a group of Mark's high-school friends, who gave her polite nods, and headed toward the main stage where the engagement banner hung high.

Suddenly, a shadow blocked her path, and Clara looked up to see Mark standing right in front of her. His black tuxedo was tailored to perfection, but his face was twisted into a dark scowl. Before Clara could say a single word of congratulations, Mark grabbed her upper arm tightly and pulled her toward a quiet corner away from the main entrance. His grip was tight enough to leave a mark, and his eyes were cold as he looked at her outfit. Clara blinked in surprise, feeling her heart sink as she saw the sheer anger in her younger brother's eyes.

Mark: What are you doing here, Clara?

Clara: Mark, I brought the pearl necklace you asked for. Mother's necklace.

Mark: I told you to send it with a courier, not bring it yourself. Look at you.

Clara: I wanted to wish you well in person. I paid for this whole party, Mark.

Mark: Keep your mouth shut about that. My new family is here, and you look like a beggar.

Clara felt a sharp sting in her chest as he spat those cruel words at her. She had spent the last five years working two jobs to help pay off Mark's college tuition, and when he asked for help securing this venue, she spent her entire savings on a non-refundable deposit. Evelyn came from a very wealthy family, and Mark was terrified of looking poor in front of his future in-laws. He had constantly warned Clara that his new in-laws value high social standing above everything else. But Clara never expected that he would treat his own sister like an embarrassing secret after everything she had sacrificed for him.

Clara: I spent my life savings so you could have this hall, Mark. How can you say that?

Mark: Because Evelyn's father is a senior partner at the law firm I want to join. If he sees my sister looking like a middle-class nobody, it ruins my image.

Clara: I am your family, Mark. That should mean more than an image.

Mark: You don't fit in here, Clara. Just leave the pearls on the table and go home.

Clara stared at him, unable to believe that this was the same boy she had raised after their parents passed away. She took a step back, clutching her handbag tightly against her waist. She tried to maintain her composure, refusing to let the wealthy guests around them see her cry. But Mark stepped closer, his face turning red with frustration as he noticed a few people glancing in their direction. He felt his fragile pride threatened by her presence, and his temper boiled over in an instant.
