Derek stood in the doorway holding a heavy metal flashlight in his left hand.
Behind him stood his girlfriend, looking nervous near the garden path.
"I knew you wouldn't just drive away, Emily," Derek said with a harsh grin.
"You always thought you were smarter than everyone else in this family," he added.
Emily quickly locked the metal box and stood up, placing herself in front of it.
"You lied about Dad's will, Derek," Emily said, keeping her voice steady.
"You forced Mom to sign those transfer papers under threat of losing her home," she said.
Derek laughed and stepped into the small shed, shining the beam directly in her eyes.
"It doesn't matter what those papers say, Emily," Derek said coldly.
"I control the lawyer who filed the fake deed three months ago," he boasted.
"No judge is going to accept old papers found in a dusty shed over state records," he said.
"Give me the memory card and the folder right now," he demanded, extending his hand.
Emily shoved the papers into her leather bag and zipped it tight.
"I am taking these straight to the county prosecutor's office," Emily declared.
Derek lunged forward and grabbed the strap of her leather shoulder bag.
Emily pulled back with all her weight, causing Derek to stumble over a wooden crate.
He lost his grip on the strap and dropped his flashlight onto the dirt floor.
Emily bolted out the shed door and ran fast toward the glass greenhouse.
"Stop her!" Derek yelled to his girlfriend as he scrambled up from the ground.
Emily ducked through the side door of the greenhouse, hiding behind tall potted plants.
Her heart hammered in her chest as she heard Derek's heavy footsteps outside.
She pulled out her phone and hit the quick-dial button for her local attorney, Sarah.
"Sarah, I have the original will and the financial audit records," Emily whispered urgently.
"Where are you right now?" Sarah asked through the small speaker.
"I am on the property, and Derek is trying to take the evidence!" Emily said.
"Stay hidden. I am calling the local police department immediately," Sarah instructed.
Emily heard a loud crash near the entrance as Derek kicked open the glass door.
