The Triumph Above

Up on the high marble balcony, Victoria adjusted the gold bracelet on her wrist and took a step closer to the stone railing. She looked down at the motionless body on the stone courtyard below, her face showing no pity or regret whatsoever. The afternoon breeze carried the scent of garden roses and wet pavement up to the second floor, creating a quiet atmosphere after the sudden violence.

Richard wiped a drop of sweat from his forehead and straightened his navy suit jacket, checking his polished leather shoes for any scuffs or dust. He looked down at the broken smartphone lying on the stone patio and smiled with genuine relief, believing that every shred of evidence had just been destroyed. He put his hands into his pockets and leaned slightly over the edge to get a better view of the scene.

Victoria: She deserved it. The evidence is gone.

Richard: It's over. Nobody can stop us now.

Victoria: Make sure the housekeepers sweep up those loose papers before the police arrive to ask questions.

Richard: I'll tell them she slipped while taking photos near the railing. It was a tragic accident, nothing more.

Victoria chuckled softly, turning her back on the balcony to walk toward the air-conditioned comfort of the master suite. She felt absolute confidence in her family's wealth and position, believing that no ordinary employee could ever challenge the Sterling name. In her mind, power always protected those who owned the land and paid the bills.

Richard remained at the stone balustrade for another moment, soaking in what he believed was his ultimate victory over his father's loyal accountant. He had spent months worrying about federal audits, bank inquiries, and potential criminal charges that could strip away his luxury mansion and corporate title. Now, with the main witness lying still on the hard floor below, he felt like the undisputed master of his world.

Down in the courtyard, Elena lay completely still for several long seconds as her chest struggled to pull in cold air. Pain throbbed along her left side, and a hot stream of blood trickled slowly from her nose down across her upper lip and chin. Her cheek pressed against the cool stone, and her left leg felt numb from the hard impact against the pavement.

Slowly, her mind began to clear through the ringing haze in her ears, reminding her of the reason she had come to the mansion today. She remembered Arthur Sterling's kind voice telling her that honesty was the only true measure of a person's character. She remembered the thousands of innocent workers whose retirement pensions depended on the evidence she had gathered over the past six months.

Elena's right hand twitched slightly against the warm flagstone floor, her fingers curling into a tight fist as her determination returned. She realized that Richard and Victoria were still watching her from above, assuming she was broken and helpless. But Elena was not broken, and she refused to let greed win without a final fight.

She pulled her right arm under her chest, pressing her palm against the stone as she slowly began pushing her upper body off the ground. Every muscle in her back burned with deep ache, but she forced herself up inch by inch until she was resting on her knees. Blood dripped from her nose onto the white marble floor, but a small, fierce smile began to form on her lip as her right hand slipped deep inside her inner jacket pocket.
