A Dangerous Fall Down

Elena slowly walked up the curved marble staircase, her shoes making soft clicking sounds against the hard stone steps. Her mind raced as she evaluated her options, knowing that fleeing through the front doors might cause Richard to call security guards to block the gate. She reached the wide upper hallway where the high balcony overlooked the bright central courtyard below, its white walls shimmering under the afternoon sun.

Richard stepped forward, blocking the path toward the private offices, while Victoria stood near the carved stone railing with an icy expression. The American flag hanging beside them fluttered gently in the breeze coming through the open patio doors, creating a strange contrast between civic pride and dark greed. Elena kept her back near the wall, her hands trembling slightly as she held the binder against her chest.

Richard: Give me that file right now, Elena!

Elena: Never! Everyone will finally see who you really are!

Victoria: Push her, Richard! End this nuisance once and for all!

Richard moved with violent speed, lunging forward to grab the heavy leather binder from Elena's hands. Elena pulled back sharply, ducking under his arm and spinning toward the open balcony edge in an attempt to break past him toward the stairs. But Richard was larger and stronger, grabbing her jacket sleeve and yanking her back toward the low stone balustrade.

Elena: Get your hands off me!

Richard: You ruined everything! My father was a fool, and you're just as stupid as he was!

Elena swung her elbow back, striking Richard across the jaw and sending him stumbling back against the wall. Victoria gasped in anger, dropping her glass onto the marble floor where it shattered into bright fragments. Richard roared in anger, his face twisting into a furious scowl as he lunged again with full force.

Richard: You don't get to ruin my life!

He slammed both hands violently into Elena's shoulders, throwing his full weight forward against her chest. Elena gasped as her back hit the top of the stone balustrade, her legs lifting off the ground as momentum carried her over the edge. Time seemed to slow down completely as her fingers lost their grip on the heavy binder, sending papers flying through the air like white birds.

Elena: Nooo!

She tumbled through the open air, the wind rushing loudly past her face as the grand courtyard rose rapidly to meet her. Below, the stone floor surrounding the central water fountain looked hard and unforgiving under the bright white sunlight. Elena twisted her body in mid-air, pulling her head inward to protect herself as best as she could before the violent impact hit.

Her body struck the paved stone courtyard with a terrible thud that echoed off the high exterior walls. Her shoulder slammed down first, followed by her hip, sending her sliding across the smooth flagstones near the edge of the fountain pool. Her smartphone flew out of her hand, skidding five feet away before hitting a decorative stone pillar with a loud crack that completely shattered its screen into dark spiderweb lines.

Pain shot through Elena's ribs and legs like hot fire, knocking the air entirely out of her lungs as she lay motionless on the sunny patio. Dust settled around her, mixing with the scattered financial pages that floated down from the upper balcony like fallen leaves. High above, the figure of Richard stood beside his mother, both of them staring down at her body with cold, unfeeling eyes.
