The bright daylight streamed through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the luxury dining room, reflecting off the polished marble flooring.
Arthur stood near the long dining table, adjusting the collar of his black tuxedo while holding a sweet white cupcake.
His eight-year-old son, Jamie, stood right beside him in a crisp white dress shirt and black bow tie, staring at the dessert with wide, anxious eyes.
Nearby, the family maid, Sarah, kept her hands folded over her beige uniform, her eyes darting nervously between Arthur and the boy.
Arthur: This looks delicious. I haven't had a sugar treat like this in months.
Jamie: Dad... please don't eat it.
Arthur: What do you mean, buddy? It's just a little snack before the board members arrive.
Sarah: Sir, maybe you should listen to young Jamie.
Arthur: Oh, come on, both of you. It's just a cupcake. What could possibly be wrong with a piece of cake?
Arthur brought the dessert up to his lips and took a slow, deliberate bite, chewing happily as the quiet ambient sound filled the room.
Jamie's face turned pale, his small hands clenching into tight fists at his sides as he watched his father take another breath.
Before Arthur could swallow or take a second bite, Jamie lunged forward with all his strength, knocking the sweet right out of his father's hands.
The dessert flew through the air and crashed hard against the white marble countertop, smashing completely open into a messy pile of crumbs.
Arthur: Jamie! What on earth is wrong with you?
Sarah: Sir, wait! Please look at the table!
Arthur: Why did you knock that away? That was completely unacceptable behavior!
Jamie: Look at it, Dad! Look inside!
Arthur turned back toward the marble counter in anger, but his words caught in his throat as something dark moved inside the white frosting.
A massive, black cockroach crawled out from the center of the broken cake, its long legs skittering across the clean stone surface.
Jamie let out a sharp, gasping breath and took two panicked steps back, his eyes full of absolute terror as he stared at the creature.
Arthur: What in the world... how did that get in there?
Jamie: I told you not to eat it! I tried to tell you!
Arthur: Jamie, calm down. It's just a bug, but how did the kitchen staff let this happen?
Jamie hid his face against Sarah's apron, shaking violently as the maid wrapped a protective arm around his shoulders.
Arthur: Why is he so terrified? Sarah, why is he looking at you like that?
Sarah: He isn't afraid of me, Mr. Vance. Ask him where that cake came from.
Arthur dropped down to one knee, getting right down to eye level with his shaking son.
Arthur: Jamie, buddy, look at me. Who gave you that cupcake to bring to me?
Jamie: Grandma... Grandma put it inside before dinner.
Arthur's head snapped around toward the open doorway, where his mother stood in silence, her cold eyes staring back at them with a guilty, unreadable expression that made his blood run cold.
