Mark turned his back on Vanessa without another word, taking off his gold engagement band and dropping it onto the floor right over her fallen flowers. He lifted Lily up into his arms, pulling her small body tightly against his chest. She wrapped her arms around his neck, hiding her face in his shoulder as the heavy weight of fear finally lifted off her small body.
As Mark turned to walk down the aisle toward the exit doors, two security guards he had called earlier stepped into the back of the room. Behind them were two police officers who had been notified about the forgery of legal documents involving a minor child. Vanessa began to cry loudly, but no one moved to help her as the officers approached the altar stage.
Mark: Officer, the woman in the bridal gown forged my signature and my late wife's legal documents to transfer child custody. The full digital trail is on my attorney's desk already.
Police Officer: Ma'am, please step down from the altar. We need to ask you some serious questions outside.
Vanessa: Mark! You can't leave me like this! Look at what you're doing to my life!
Mark: You brought this on yourself, Vanessa. Stay away from my family forever.
Mark walked past the quiet crowd of guests, his head held high and his steps steady. He carried Lily straight out of the grand estate doors and into the bright, warm afternoon sunshine. The crisp breeze felt clean and refreshing on his face after the suffocating air inside the venue.
He walked over to his car, carefully placing Lily into her child seat in the back and buckling her seatbelt tightly. He wiped the remaining tears from her soft cheeks and kissed her forehead with deep love. For the first time all day, a genuine smile spread across Lily's small face as she looked into her father's eyes.
Lily: Are we really going home now, Daddy?
Mark: Yes, baby girl. We are going straight home, just the two of us.
Lily: Is anybody ever going to try to send me away again?
Mark: Never. You are my whole world, Lily, and nothing is ever going to change that. Let's go get some ice cream instead.
