Mark knelt on the cold floor for what felt like an eternity, staring at the purple ink. The warm sunlight streaming through the tall hall windows felt suddenly freezing. A wave of deep shock washed over him, followed immediately by an overwhelming wave of pure fury. His late wife had asked him one thing on her deathbed: to protect their little girl no matter what happened in this world. He had promised her that Lily would always come first, above all else.
Mark leaned forward and pressed his forehead against Lily's soft forehead, taking a deep, shuddering breath to calm his wild pulse. His hands, wearing the brand-new gold wedding band he had bought for today's ceremony, clenched into rock-hard fists at his sides. The knuckles popped loudly in the quiet hallway. He forced his facial features to soften as he looked back down at his trembling daughter.
Mark: Did she give this to you today, Lily? Did she say these words to your face?
Lily: She came to my room while you were putting on your shoes. She said if I cried to you, she would make sure you sent me even further away.
Mark: Look at me, Lily. Look right into my eyes.
Lily blinked away her tears and looked straight at her father. Mark grabbed her tiny hands in his large palms, squeezing them with warm reassurance. He wanted to make sure she felt completely safe before he made his next move.
Mark: Nobody is taking you away from me. Not tomorrow, not next year, not ever. Do you hear me?
Lily: Are you mad at me, Daddy?
Mark: I am not mad at you, my brave girl. I am so proud of you for showing me this note. You saved us both today.
Mark stood up gracefully, taking Lily's hand in his own. He smoothed down his white jacket, though his eyes remained dark with absolute resolve. The gentle father who had walked down this hall ten minutes ago was gone. In his place stood a man ready to tear down everything he had built to protect his child. He looked down the long corridor toward the double wooden doors that led into the main ballroom where music was playing quietly.
He didn't call the police yet, and he didn't pull Vanessa aside for a private chat. He wanted everyone to see who she really was. He wanted her family, his business associates, and all their wealthy friends to witness the truth before a single vow was exchanged under the altar. He checked his phone quickly and saw a confirmation email buried in his spam folder from an elite private boarding school in Maine—paid using his own shared credit card account without his knowledge.
Mark: Hold my hand tightly, Lily. We are going to step inside that room together right now.
Lily: Is the wedding starting now?
Mark: No, sweetheart. Something much more important is happening.
