Six months later, the sun shone brightly over the lush gardens of the Crestview estate. The high-key luxury bedroom upstairs had been completely remodeled with warm wooden floors, soft cream walls, and new artwork chosen personally by Megan.
The framed US flag still hung proudly on the back wall above the king-sized bed, glowing under the afternoon daylight streaming through the bay window.
Megan sat on the edge of the bed in a yellow summer dress, her skin healthy and her smile radiant. The scars on her thigh had faded to faint white lines, visible evidence of a nightmare that was now firmly in the past.
Jake walked into the room carrying a tray with two cups of warm tea and a plate of fresh pastries, placing it gently on the nightstand beside her.
Jake: How are you feeling today, sweetheart?
Megan: I feel peaceful, Jake. For the first time in a really long time, I feel completely safe in this house.
Jake: That's because this is your house now. Dad transferred forty percent of the estate's residential trust directly into your name yesterday morning.
Megan: He really didn't have to do that, Jake. Having you here with me is all I ever needed.
Jake: He wanted to make sure you knew you were a permanent part of this family. And after what happened with the trial last week, he wanted to celebrate.
The heavy mahogany door opened softly, and Arthur walked in holding a legal folder under his arm, smiling warmly as he looked at his son and daughter-in-law.
Arthur: Good afternoon, kids. I just got back from my meeting with the district attorney's office.
Jake: Did the judge finalize the sentencing, Dad?
Arthur: Evelyn was sentenced to twelve years in state prison without the possibility of early parole, thanks to the video evidence and her attempt to flee the scene. Her assets have been completely frozen to pay for Megan's medical trust fund.
Megan: Thank you for standing by us, Arthur. It means everything to me.
Arthur: It was the least I could do, Megan. You brought truth and honesty back into this family, and you gave my son the happiness he deserves.
Jake sat down beside Megan on the mattress, taking her hand in his and giving it a gentle squeeze under the warm sunlight.
Jake: No more secrets, no more fear, and no more evil stepmothers.
Megan: Just us, our family, and a bright future ahead.
As the peaceful afternoon breeze rustled the leaves outside the open bay window, the three of them laughed together, knowing that justice had finally been served and their home was whole once more.
