The Paper In The Handbag

Jake: Well, well, well. Look what fell out of your garden bag, Evelyn.

Evelyn: That is private legal correspondence between me and my estate lawyer! You have no right to touch those papers!

Jake: This is a formal relinquishment of medical power of attorney and spousal inheritance rights, pre-printed with Megan's full legal name!

Jake picked up the folded papers from the marble floor, reading through the bold print at the top of the page while his chest heaved with growing anger.

Jake: You drafted a document forcing Megan to surrender her rights to my father's medical decisions and his real estate trust fund if anything happens to him?

Evelyn: Your father is an elderly man with failing health! I am his legal wife! I deserve total authority over his medical treatment and his money!

Jake: You tried to force my wife to sign this at claw-point while my father was out of town?!

Megan: She told me if I didn't sign it today, she would tell your father that I was stealing money from the estate accounts. She said no one would believe me over her.

Evelyn: Because no one will! You're a former schoolteacher from a middle-class family who married into wealth! Who do you think the board of directors will believe? Me, or a girl who didn't have a thousand dollars in her checking account when she met my stepson?

Jake: You really think money protects you from everything, don't you?

Evelyn: Money builds this entire house, Jake! It bought the clothes on your wife's back and the bed she's weeping on right now! If I decide she doesn't belong in this mansion, she leaves!

Jake: You don't own this mansion, Evelyn. My mother's trust owns this estate. My father only has a lifetime residence clause!

Evelyn froze, her hand still hovering near her chest where her handbag used to be. Her posture stiffened as she stared at Jake.

Evelyn: What did you just say?

Jake: You thought you were so clever marrying my dad five years after my mother died. You thought you were stepping into a hundred-million-dollar real estate portfolio that you could clean out the moment his heart gave out.

Evelyn: I am his wife! I am entitled to half of his estate by state law!

Jake: Not when the deed to this property and every commercial building in his portfolio was moved into an irrevocable family trust in 2014, signed by my birth mother before she passed away!

Megan: Jake... she threatened to call the police on me earlier. She said she would claim I attacked her first.

Jake: Oh, we are definitely calling the police today, Megan. But they aren't coming for you.

Jake reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his cell phone, unlocking the screen with his thumb.

Evelyn: Put that phone away, Jake! We do not bring police officers into this estate! Think about your father's reputation! Think about the stock price of Vance Enterprises!

Jake: I am thinking about my wife's bleeding leg, Evelyn. And I am thinking about the security cameras installed in the ceiling of this hallway.

Evelyn's face drained of all color, her arrogant expression crumbling into pure horror as she looked up at the corner of the bedroom doorway.

Evelyn: The... the hallway cameras?

Jake: The high-definition 4K motion cameras my father had installed last month after the security scare. The ones that upload directly to my phone's cloud server in real time.
