Three weeks later, the local courthouse was packed for the final probate hearing.
Bright sunlight streamed through the tall stained-glass windows of the historic courtroom.
Mark sat at the plaintiff table alongside David, feeling calm and confident for once.
Evelyn sat with her expensive defense lawyers across the aisle, looking stressed and defeated.
The judge tapped his wooden gavel twice, bringing the noisy room to total order.
"I have reviewed all the evidence submitted by both parties in this case," the judge began.
"The financial ledgers clearly demonstrate systematic fraud committed over three years," the judge said.
"Furthermore, the testimony regarding the endangerment of young Lily Vance is deeply concerning."
Evelyn stared straight ahead, her face completely expressionless as the ruling was read.
"I am revoking Mrs. Vance's status as executor of the Vance estate immediately," the judge stated.
"Full legal guardianship of the trust fund is granted to Mark Vance without restriction."
"Mrs. Vance will also face formal criminal investigation for financial fraud and neglect," he added.
The judge slammed the heavy gavel down, closing the case once and for all.
Mark let out a long breath he felt like he had been holding for months.
He turned to David and shook his hand warmly with a broad relieved smile.
"Thank you for everything, David, we finally got justice for Lily," Mark said.
As Evelyn was led out of the courtroom by court officers, she refused to look back.
Mark walked out into the warm afternoon sunshine outside the grand marble courthouse steps.
His sister was waiting near the steps holding Lily in a pretty pink summer dress.
Lily saw her father and held her small arms out wide with a happy giggle.
Mark ran down the steps and lifted his daughter high up into the blue sky.
"We are going home now, sweetie, and everything is going to be alright," Mark promised.
Lily hugged his neck tightly, safe and warm in her father's loving arms.
The family estate was finally safe, and their long painful nightmare was officially over.
