Evelyn blocked the doorway of the study with a furious expression on her face.
"You are not leaving this house with those papers, Mark," she sneered menacingly.
"Get out of my way, Evelyn, before I force my way past you," Mark replied.
She stepped aside slowly, but kept her eyes fixed on him as he walked into the hall.
Mark moved quickly down the wide carpeted staircase toward the main entrance doors.
Suddenly, the heavy front doors swung open and two large men in suits walked inside.
They were Evelyn's personal security guards, brought in to protect her private property.
"Stop him right there and take that jacket from him," Evelyn ordered from above.
The guards stepped forward, blocking Mark's path to the front porch and safety.
Mark backed up against the polished wood railing, holding his ground firmly against them.
"You touch me, and I will add assault charges to your police records!" Mark warned.
The guards hesitated for a second, looking back up at Evelyn standing on the landing.
"Do not listen to him, just take the book!" Evelyn commanded with a raised voice.
Before anyone could move, the front door burst open again with a loud bang.
David walked in holding a stack of legal documents, accompanied by two police officers.
"That will be quite enough, Mrs. Vance," David announced loudly across the foyer.
Evelyn froze on the stairs as the police officers stepped into the bright hallway.
"We have an emergency court order granting Mark full access to these premises," David said.
"This is my private residence, you cannot just barge in here!" Evelyn screamed furiously.
"We also have a warrant to seize all financial records regarding the estate," the officer said.
Mark walked past the stunned security guards and handed the black journal to David.
"Here is everything we need to prove the embezzlement, David," Mark said calmly.
Evelyn gripped the stair railing tightly, her knuckles turning completely white with anger.
She knew her carefully constructed plan was falling apart right before her eyes.
"You ruined everything, Mark!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the large foyer.
"You did this to yourself when you put my daughter in danger," Mark replied firmly.
