Mark pulled his silver sedan into the long concrete driveway of his late father's suburban estate.
The afternoon sun was shining brightly over the manicured green lawn and the tall oak trees.
He shut off the engine and took a deep breath before opening the car door.
His heart was beating fast because he knew this visit would not be an easy one.
Ever since his father passed away three months ago, the big house had felt cold and unwelcoming.
His stepmother Evelyn had taken complete control of the family business and the property.
Mark stepped onto the porch and reached for the heavy brass door handle.
He was coming to pick up his three-year-old daughter Lily after her weekend visit with Evelyn.
He knocked twice on the heavy wooden door, but no one answered right away.
A strange feeling settled in the pit of his stomach as he stood waiting on the porch.
He turned the handle and was surprised to find the front door unlocked.
Mark pushed the door open slowly and stepped inside the grand marble foyer.
The house was completely quiet except for the low hum of the central air conditioner.
"Evelyn?" Mark called out into the dark hallway, but his voice just echoed back to him.
He walked toward the back of the house where the main living room was located.
As he got closer, he heard a faint crying sound coming from down the hall.
His stomach tightened as he recognized the small voice of his daughter Lily.
He moved faster, turning the corner quickly toward the large storage room near the kitchen.
The heavy metal door to the storage room was shut tight and secured with a latch.
Mark rushed forward and pulled the latch open with a sharp click.
He swung the door wide and felt a blast of freezing cold air hit his face.
Inside the refrigerated room sat little Lily, shivering on a wooden bench in her light jacket.
"Lily!" Mark shouted, scooping his small daughter up into his arms immediately.
He wrapped his heavy coat around her small shaking body to warm her up.
"Daddy's here, sweetie, you're safe now," he whispered into her hair.
Lily clung tightly to his shirt, her small hands ice-cold against his neck.
He walked out into the warm hallway, his chest pounding with pure rage and fear.
Footsteps echoed behind him, and he turned to see Evelyn standing near the dining room.
She was wearing an elegant dress and holding a glass of iced water in her hand.
Her face was completely calm, as if nothing unusual had just happened in her home.
"What is wrong with you, Evelyn?" Mark demanded, clutching Lily closer to his chest.
"Why was my daughter locked inside that cold room?" he yelled across the polished floor.
Evelyn took a slow sip from her glass and looked at him without blinking once.
"It was an accident, Mark, the door swung shut while she was playing," Evelyn said coolly.
"You know that door cannot lock from the inside by itself," Mark snapped back sharply.
"You are making a big deal out of nothing as usual," Evelyn replied with a sneer.
Mark knew right then that this was no simple mistake made by a careless stepmother.
