A Traitor In The Family

His Sister Smashed The Birthday Cake To Save His Life

The weight of the betrayal settled over the room like ice. Friends who had come to celebrate were standing near the walls in total shock, staring at Chloe with wide eyes. Jason's hand shook as he held the glass bottle, his eyes locked onto the woman he had planned to marry. He remembered all the times she had talked about their future together, their dream home, and their upcoming wedding plans. It had all been a hollow act designed to steal his family estate.

Chloe: You loved the idea of a beautiful blonde girlfriend on your arm at corporate galas! You never cared about my financial stress!

Jason: Financial stress?! You could have talked to me! I would have helped your family with a loan or legal support!

Chloe: A loan?! My father didn't want a handout from your arrogant family! He needed clean equity!

Lily: Clean equity by murdering my brother in cold blood?! You are a monster, Chloe!

Chloe: Shut up, Lily! You ruined everything! If you hadn't been snooping around the kitchen like a pest, nobody would have known!

Jason: So you admit it! You admit you tried to poison me today!

Chloe: Yes! I admit it! What are you going to do about it now, Jason?! Call the police?!

Jason: You're damn right I'm calling the police!

Chloe: Go ahead! Call them! It's my word against yours! That video doesn't prove I knew what was in that bottle!

Lily: You think the police won't test the cake, Chloe?! Look at the chemicals eating through the hardwood finish on the floor!

Everyone looked down at the spot where the smashed cake rested on the floor. The blue-tinted frosting was literally bubbling against the expensive wood, stripping away the shiny top coat of varnish. The harsh chemical reaction was so strong that small wisps of pale vapor were rising into the air. Chloe took another step back, her back hitting the edge of the fireplace mantle as her eyes filled with panic.

Jason: That stuff is melting my floor... If I had eaten a single bite of that cake, I would be dead in minutes.

Lily: That was her exact plan. She wanted you dead before the party ended so she could claim the life insurance payout tomorrow morning.

Chloe: You can't prove anything! My lawyer will destroy this case in court before it ever reaches a jury!

Jason: You won't make it to court without a mugshot, Chloe. My attorney is already on the phone with the chief of police.

Lily: And I already locked the front gates from my phone app. You aren't driving anywhere today.

Chloe: You little brat! Give me that phone!

Chloe lunged forward with her hands clawed, trying to grab Lily's phone right out of her grip. But Jason instantly stepped between them, towering over Chloe with a fierce look in his eyes. He grabbed Chloe by the wrists and held her firmly in place, stopping her attack before she could touch his sister. Chloe struggled against his grip, screaming and cursing as her perfect composure completely crumbled into ugly rage.

Jason: Don't you dare put your hands on my sister!

Chloe: Let go of me, Jason! You're hurting my arms!

Jason: You tried to murder me in my own home! You're lucky I'm holding you for the police instead of throwing you out!

Lily: Sirens are coming up the driveway right now. I hear them down the hill.

Chloe: Jason, please! Don't do this to me! Think about our memories! Think about how much we loved each other!

Jason: The woman I loved didn't exist. You were just a killer looking for a paycheck.

The distant sound of police sirens echoed up the winding driveway toward the estate. Chloe began to weep uncontrollably, her tears running down her cheeks and ruining her expensive makeup. She sank toward the floor, but Jason held her arms firmly so she couldn't run toward the back exit. The guests watched in silence as the siren sounds grew louder and louder outside the front doors.
