Signing Under Pressure

Rachel: Enjoy your flight, because your life with me ends today!

Daniel held his throbbing face with both hands, his mouth open in total shock.

Daniel: Rachel, you can't do this here! Everyone is watching us!

Rachel: I don't care who is watching us, Daniel!

Daniel: Think about my career! Think about my reputation at the hospital!

Rachel: You should have thought about your career before you cheated on me!

Rachel thrust the heavy stack of legal papers directly into his chest. Daniel caught the papers awkwardly against his gold jacket, his hands trembling with fear. The bystanders in the terminal began pulling out their smartphones, recording the dramatic scene unfolding right before their eyes. Daniel looked around at the crowd, realizing that his high-status image as a respectable doctor was crumbling in a matter of seconds. His ex-wife stepped back with her children, looking embarrassed and angry that she had been dragged into his double life. She grabbed her carry-on bag and moved toward the gate without saying a single word to him, leaving Daniel completely alone to deal with the consequences of his actions.

Rachel: Sign the divorce settlement right now, or I release every text message to your medical board.

Daniel: You wouldn't do that to me, Rachel. We built a life together!

Rachel: Try me and see what happens to your license!

Daniel looked at the paper in his hands, seeing the bold black letters that clearly read Divorce Decree. He knew that Rachel owned the commercial lease to his private medical office and had funded most of his expensive equipment through a joint family trust. If she pulled her financial support and exposed his affair, he would lose his practice, his house, and his standing in the community. He reached into his inner jacket pocket with shaking fingers and pulled out a black ink pen. He laid the legal papers flat on top of a nearby luggage bag and bent over to write his signature on the bottom line. His hand shook so violently that the signature was barely readable, but it was legally binding nonetheless.

As soon as he placed the final mark on the paper, panic washed over his face like a tidal wave. He realized that by signing the document, he was forfeiting his share of the luxury house, the family trust fund, and his rights to her real estate company assets. In a desperate moment of panic, Daniel grabbed the top corner of the paper and tried to tear the document in half right in front of her face. The thick paper made a loud tearing sound as it ripped straight down the middle. He panted heavily, looking up at Rachel with wide, bloodshot eyes, hoping that destroying the paper would undo the nightmare he had created for himself. He took a step toward her, holding the torn pieces of paper in his shaking hands like a broken child asking for forgiveness.
