The heavy, crystal chandelier hung over the formal dining hall of the massive Sterling estate, casting bright light onto the polished oak table. Long afternoon shadows stretched across the room, catching the glint of expensive wine glasses and silver trays. Harrison Sterling stood near the head of the table, his hand resting on the back of his chair, looking out over the quiet room with a tired sigh.
His fiancée, Julianna Vance, paced near the high bay windows, her high heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor with an irritated rhythm. She smoothed down her dark dress, her eyes narrowing as she glanced toward the grand double doors leading to the main kitchen hallway.
Julianna: Harrison, darling, please tell the kitchen staff to hurry with the second course. We have important business guests arriving in less than an hour.
Harrison: They are doing their best, Julianna. Give them a minute to clear the salad plates.
Julianna: I pay them to be fast and professional, not to take their sweet time while we wait. This mansion needs to look absolutely spotless today, and the service must be perfect.
Before Harrison could offer a calm response, the grand double doors swung open with a heavy thud. Fast, uneven footsteps clattered wildly against the polished wood as three-year-old Noah burst into the room. The little boy’s small black tuxedo jacket was completely unbuttoned, his socks were loose, and tears were running down his pale cheeks.
Noah: Mommy! Mommy, where are you?
Harrison: Noah? What is wrong, buddy? Why are you crying?
Julianna: Noah, sit down right now! You are going to ruin your formal clothes before the guests even arrive!
Noah ignored both of their voices completely. His little legs moved as fast as they could past the long mahogany table, heading straight toward the serving area near the back wall. Standing beside a quiet silver tray was a woman dressed in a plain grey maid uniform, her dark hair pulled back neatly. The moment the boy ran toward her, Clara dropped down to her knees on the cold floor, opening her arms wide.
Noah slammed directly into her chest, wrapping his tiny arms tight around her neck. He buried his face into the fabric of her grey dress, sobbing loudly as he clung to her like a safety line.
Clara: Noah! Oh sweetheart, you came back! I knew you would come back to me!
Julianna: What on earth do you think you are doing?! Get your hands off him this instant!
Julianna’s chair screeched loudly against the hardwood as she stood up fast, her face flushed with sudden anger. She pointed a sharp, manicured finger toward the kneeling maid, her voice rising to a harsh yell that echoed off the white walls.
Julianna: Harrison, get him away from her right now! She is just a temporary hired servant from the agency!
Noah pulled back just a tiny bit, his small hands still clutching the shoulders of Clara’s uniform tightly. He turned his tear-stained face toward his father, his big eyes filled with deep confusion and fear.
Noah: Daddy, why is everyone calling Mommy the maid?
Harrison froze where he stood. The glass of water in his right hand slipped free, crashing onto the hard floor and shattering into dozens of pieces. Cold water splashed across his polished shoes, but he did not move a single inch. His breath hitched in his throat as he took a slow step toward the back of the room, staring directly at the woman holding his son.
Harrison: What... what did you just call her, Noah?
Noah: Mommy.
Harrison took two heavy steps closer, his heart pounding wildly against his ribs as he stared into the maid's pale face.
Harrison: Clara?
Clara raised her eyes to meet his, tears spilling over her dark lashes as a shaky breath escaped her lips. The silence in the room stretched thin and tense, breaking the long lies that had held the house captive for three painful years.
