The Courtroom Justice

Six weeks later, the main courtroom of the Dallas County Criminal Courthouse was packed to capacity with news cameras and high-society reporters.

Victoria sat at the defense table wearing a plain gray business suit, her hair unstyled and her face pale. Beside her, her team of three defense attorneys looked nervous as they organized their files.

At the front gallery sat Sarah, Arthur, and Lawyer Vance. Little Chloe was safe at home with a trusted family nanny, far away from the media circus.

Judge Montgomery: We are here today for final sentencing in the matter of the State of Texas versus Victoria Sterling, on the charge of felony injury to a child.

Prosecutor Davis: Your Honor, the state presents video evidence recorded at the scene, along with pediatric medical records showing facial bruising and severe emotional trauma inflicted on a seven-year-old child.

Defense Attorney: Your Honor, my client is an elderly pillar of the Dallas community with zero prior criminal history! This was a single lapse in judgment during a high-stress family argument!

Judge Montgomery: A lapse in judgment, counsel? Striking a child across the face in front of fifty people is not a lapse in judgment. It is an act of sheer malice.

The judge looked down over his glasses at Victoria, who refused to look up from the defense table.

Judge Montgomery: Mrs. Sterling, do you have anything to say to this court before I deliver my sentence?

Victoria stood up slowly, her voice trembling with pride and bitterness.

Victoria: Your Honor... I have given my entire life to maintaining the dignity of my family name. I only sought to instill respect in a child who was being raised without proper discipline.

Judge Montgomery: Discipline does not involve leaving physical marks on a seven-year-old girl, Mrs. Sterling. Your total lack of remorse is frankly appalling.

The judge pounded his heavy wooden gavel down onto the bench.

Judge Montgomery: On the charge of felony injury to a child, I sentence you to two years in the Dallas County Correctional Facility, followed by three years of supervised probation.

Gasps erupted throughout the courtroom as reporters began typing furiously on their laptops.

Victoria: Prison?! No! You cannot send me to prison! I am Victoria Sterling!

Judge Montgomery: Furthermore, a permanent five-hundred-yard restraining order is hereby issued. You are barred from contacting Chloe Sterling or approaching her home and school for the rest of your natural life.

Victoria: Arthur! Sarah! Tell him this is wrong! Help me!

Two bailiffs moved in immediately, securing steel handcuffs around Victoria's wrists once again.

Arthur stood up from his seat, looking at his mother one final time with a look of calm resolution.

Arthur: Goodbye, Mother. I hope you find peace in there.

Victoria: You ungrateful child! I gave you everything!

Sarah: You gave him fear, Victoria. But we are giving Chloe a future.

The bailiffs led the weeping, shouting matriarch through the side door of the courtroom, locking it firmly behind her.

Sarah took Arthur's hand, feeling the tension finally leave his shoulders after thirty long years under his mother's thumb.

Arthur: It's finally over, isn't it?

Sarah: It's over, Arthur. She can never touch our family again.
