The Secret In The Will

Two days later, Sarah sat in a high-rise office in downtown Dallas, looking out over the city skyline. Her lawyer, Richard Vance, pushed a stack of thick legal files across the glass desk.

Lawyer Vance: Victoria was released on a fifty-thousand-dollar bond this morning. Her criminal defense attorneys are already trying to negotiate a plea deal for simple misdemeanor assault.

Sarah: No plea deals. I want the district attorney to press full felony injury to a child charges.

Lawyer Vance: With the medical report from the pediatric clinic and fifty guest statements, they don't have a choice. But that's not the biggest news, Sarah.

Sarah: What did you find in her late husband's financial records?

Lawyer Vance: Exactly what you suspected. When Arthur's father passed away ten years ago, he didn't leave the mansion or the trust fund directly to Victoria.

Sarah leaned forward, her eyes narrowing with intense focus.

Sarah: What do you mean? She has been controlling the entire estate for a decade!

Lawyer Vance: She was appointed as a temporary executor, contingent on one strict clause in the original will.

Sarah: What clause?

Lawyer Vance: The morality and protection clause. If Victoria ever committed a violent crime or was convicted of abuse against any biological heir of the Sterling line, her rights as executor would be immediately terminated.

Sarah let out a soft, bitter laugh, shaking her head in disbelief.

Sarah: My father-in-law knew... he knew how cruel she truly was.

Lawyer Vance: He knew she was capable of dark things. He put that clause in the trust to protect Arthur and future grandchildren like Chloe.

Sarah: So because of her arrest for hitting Chloe...

Lawyer Vance: She automatically forfeits her control over the sixty-million-dollar trust fund and the Dallas estate mansion. Control transfers directly to the child's legal mother and father.

The office door opened, and Arthur stepped inside, looking exhausted with dark circles under his eyes.

Arthur: Sarah... I just came from my mother's lawyers' office. She is losing her mind.

Sarah: Did she try to threaten you again, Arthur?

Arthur: She told me if I don't force you to drop the charges, she will sell the estate out from under us and leave us with nothing.

Sarah: Sit down, Arthur. You need to see what Mr. Vance just uncovered.

Arthur took a seat beside his wife, scanning the highlighted paragraphs on the legal documents.

Arthur: My father's original trust agreement... I thought Mother destroyed these papers years ago!

Lawyer Vance: She tried to hide them, Arthur. But court subpoenas have a way of digging up the truth.

Arthur: So... she never actually owned the estate? She was just holding it in trust?

Lawyer Vance: Exactly. And her violent actions at the gala violated the core condition of her executorship. As of this afternoon, we are filing a petition to freeze every single one of her bank accounts.

Arthur: She is going to be penniless...

Sarah: She did this to herself, Arthur. She chose to hit our daughter because she thought her wealth made her untouchable.

Arthur: You're right, Sarah. For years, I let her control our lives because I was afraid of losing my inheritance. But when I saw Chloe crying on that floor... something inside me broke.

Sarah: We are going to take everything back, Arthur. For Chloe's future.

Arthur: What's our next step, Mr. Vance?

Lawyer Vance: We serve Victoria with an immediate eviction notice for the Dallas estate before her preliminary hearing tomorrow morning.
