Two months later, the Dallas County Courthouse was packed with news reporters and public spectators eager to see the final sentencing of Victoria Sterling.
Victoria sat at the defense table dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, her blonde hair messy and unstyled, her wrists restrained by handcuffs linked to a heavy waist chain.
Charles sat in the front row of the gallery wearing a sharp black suit, holding hands with Hannah, while his family lawyer sat beside them with thick folders of medical records.
Judge Miller: Court is now in session. We are here for the sentencing of Victoria Sterling on charges of felony child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and attempted child endangerment.
Prosecutor: Your Honor, the state presents the complete video footage recorded by the victim's guardian, along with the emergency medical reports from Dallas Children's Hospital.
The prosecutor clicked a button on his podium, and the large courtroom screen showed the terrifying scene from the living room—showing Victoria bringing the hot iron down toward the toddler while he screamed.
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Several jurors winced and turned their eyes away from the screen in disgust.
Judge Miller: That is sufficient. Turn off the monitor.
Prosecutor: Your Honor, the defendant showed zero remorse. She used a household appliance as a weapon against a helpless three-year-old child simply because he made noise. The state requests the maximum allowable sentence under law.
Judge Miller: Defense counsel, does the accused have any statement before I render judgment?
Arthur Vance stood up slowly, looking completely defeated.
Arthur Vance: My client has agreed to sign a full plea agreement, Your Honor. She waives all rights to appeal and surrenders all marital asset claims against the Sterling estate.
Victoria: Your Honor, please! I was under extreme emotional strain! I never intended to hurt the child permanently!
Judge Miller: Silence, Ms. Sterling!
The judge slammed his wooden gavel hard against the bench, his eyes cold as he stared down at the woman in orange.
Judge Miller: I have reviewed the medical images and watched the hidden camera footage. Your actions were vile, cruel, and completely devoid of basic human warmth. You preyed on a defenseless baby for your own twisted desire for control.
Victoria: Please! Have mercy! I've never been in prison before!
Judge Miller: You showed no mercy to a crying child. Therefore, on the charge of felony child abuse with a deadly weapon, I sentence you to twenty years in state prison without the possibility of early parole!
Victoria: NO! OH GOD, NO! CHARLES, SAVE ME!
Judge Miller: On the charge of attempted grand larceny and fraud, I add an additional five years to be served consecutively!
Victoria: AHHH! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME!
Two court bailiffs grabbed Victoria by her arms, dragging her back from the defense table as she kicked and shrieked hysterically.
Victoria: CHARLES! I LOVED YOU! YOU CAN'T LET THEM LOCK ME AWAY!
Charles stood up slowly from his seat, looking Victoria straight in the eye as she was hauled past him toward the holding cell door.
Charles: You loved my money, Victoria. But my son loved you, and you tried to destroy him. Enjoy your cell.
Victoria: I HATE YOU! I HATE BOTH OF YOU!
The heavy iron door slammed shut with a deep, echoing boom, completely severing her voice from the courtroom forever.
