The Evidence Revealed

Her Stepmother Tried To Burn His Baby With A Hot Iron

An hour later, the paramedics had wrapped Leo's chest and back in sterile white bandages. The toddler was fast asleep in Charles's arms, exhausted from hours of crying.

Officer Davis walked back into the living room holding a small plastic evidence bag containing the heavy iron.

Officer Davis: Mr. Sterling, the medical team says your son will recover fully, but he will need burn ointment and dressing changes for the next four weeks.

Charles: Thank God... thank you, Officer. What happens to Victoria now?

Officer Davis: She's being processed at the central station for felony child abuse and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Hannah: Officer, if I may speak... there is something else you need to see.

Charles looked up at Hannah, surprised by the sudden serious tone in her voice.

Charles: What is it, Hannah?

Hannah: Mr. Charles, for the past month, I noticed Victoria acting strange whenever you left for business trips in New York.

Charles: What do you mean?

Hannah: She was constantly locking Leo in the playroom and yelling at him for minor things. I was scared she would hurt him, so I installed a hidden nanny camera inside the bookcase three weeks ago.

Victoria's Attorney: (Entering room) That footage would be inadmissible without consent!

Charles turned around to see Victoria's personal lawyer, Arthur Vance, walking into the living room carrying a briefcase.

Charles: Vance, get the hell out of my house.

Arthur Vance: Charles, as Victoria's legal counsel, I must advise you that secret recordings inside a private residence cannot be used in court.

Officer Davis: Actually, counselor, Texas law allows household staff to record common areas if there is reasonable suspicion of child endangerment.

Hannah: The camera is right there, inside the wooden clock on the shelf. It records directly to my phone's secure cloud storage.

Hannah pulled her smartphone from her apron pocket, tapping the screen and handing it over to Officer Davis and Charles.

Charles: Let me see it.

On the screen, clear high-definition video played. It showed Victoria walking into the sunroom two weeks prior, snatching a toy out of Leo's hands, and slapping his face while he cried.

Charles: My God... she hit him before...

Hannah: Yes, sir. And look at yesterday's timestamp video.

Hannah swiped to another clip. The video showed Victoria standing near the sofa, holding the iron, deliberately plugging it in while screaming at Leo for making a mess with his toys.

Officer Davis: This video proves premeditation and ongoing child abuse, counselor. Your client is in serious trouble.

Arthur Vance stared at the phone screen, his mouth slightly open as his arrogant demeanor completely melted away.

Arthur Vance: I... I see. This changes our legal strategy significantly.

Charles: Your strategy doesn't matter, Vance. Tell your client that if she doesn't sign a full confession and relinquish all claims to my estate by tomorrow morning, I will use my entire fortune to ensure she gets the maximum sentence possible!

Arthur Vance: I will... convey your message to her in her holding cell, Mr. Sterling.

The attorney closed his briefcase and turned around, walking briskly out of the mansion without saying another word.

Charles looked down at his sleeping son, tears of relief and love spilling down his cheeks as he kissed the toddler's forehead.

Charles: Hannah... I can never repay you for what you did today. You saved my boy's life.

Hannah: I love little Leo like my own family, Mr. Charles. I would do anything to keep him safe.

Charles: Starting today, you are no longer our maid, Hannah. I want you to be Leo's full-time guardian supervisor, with a full estate salary and your own quarters in the main house.

Hannah: Oh, Mr. Charles... you don't have to do that!

Charles: I insist. Real family isn't about blood or marriage certificates, Hannah. It's about who protects you when the world gets dark.
