Prosecutor: State your full name for the court, please.
Chloe: Chloe Sterling...
Six months later, the county courthouse was packed with reporters, lawyers, and spectators. Chloe sat at the defense table in a navy blue prison jumpsuit, her wrists chained to her waist, her once-glamorous blonde hair tied back in a plain knot. Beside her sat her mother, Victoria, looking equally defeated.
Prosecutor: Miss Sterling, do you recognize the video file currently displayed on the court monitor?
Chloe: Yes...
Prosecutor: Is that you pouring a bottle of red wine over the victim, Elena Vance, while screaming that she gets nothing from the estate?
Chloe: Yes... but I was angry—
Prosecutor: No further questions, Your Honor. The video evidence speaks for itself.
The judge looked over his reading glasses at the defense table, his expression stern and unyielding.
Judge: In all my years on the bench, I have rarely seen such clear, unambiguous evidence of premeditated cruelty and fraud. Defendant Chloe Sterling, step forward for sentencing.
Chloe stood up trembling, the iron chains rattling against her orange jumpsuit.
Judge: For the charges of felony assault, extortion, and destruction of property, I sentence you to six years in state custody. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay full financial restitution to the victim for all legal costs incurred.
Chloe: Six years?! Your Honor, please! I've never been to jail before!
Judge: Then you will have six years to reflect on how you treat other human beings, Miss Sterling. Next defendant.
Victoria was called forward next, her head hung low as the judge read through the mountain of evidence against her.
Judge: Defendant Victoria Vance, for the charges of grand larceny, bank fraud, and forgery of legal documents, you are hereby sentenced to ten years in state prison without the possibility of early parole for five years.
Victoria: No! Please, Arthur's money was supposed to be mine!
Judge: Arthur Vance's money was his own to give, and he chose to give it to his daughter. Bailiffs, remove the prisoners from my courtroom.
The guards led both women away through the side doors, their cries echoing down the marble hallway outside the courtroom. Elena sat in the front row, holding Marcus's hand tightly as the final gavel slammed down on the wooden desk.
Marcus: It's officially over now, Elena. Total justice.
Elena: Total justice.
They stepped out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight, surrounded by news reporters asking questions about the famous inheritance trial. Elena stopped at the top of the courthouse steps, looking out over the city with a calm, peaceful smile.
Elena: Today, my father can finally rest in peace.
Marcus: And today, your new life officially begins.
Hand in hand, Elena and Marcus walked down the broad stone steps, leaving the drama, the lies, and the courtrooms behind them forever, stepping boldly into a bright and honest future.
