Six months later, the morning sun lit up the formal courtroom inside the Dallas County District Courthouse. The room was packed with reporters, lawyers, and spectators watching the high-profile trial of the year.
Sitting at the defense table, Evelyn looked completely unrecognizable. Her glamorous burgundy gowns were gone, replaced by a drab orange state prison jumpsuit. Her blonde hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail, and her wrists were chained tightly to her waist belt.
Across the room, Richard sat comfortably in a dark suit, holding Clara's legal paperwork in his hands. Beside him, Clara sat looking clean, professional, and confident in a simple blue dress.
Judge Montgomery: "Case number 24-CR-9041, State of Texas versus Evelyn Vance. The defendant is charged with attempted capital murder of a minor and felony assault."
Prosecutor: "Your Honor, the state presents the complete 4K security footage recovered from the Vance estate, along with medical testimony regarding the injuries sustained by the infant's nanny, Clara Jenkins, while rescuing the child."
Judge Montgomery: "Mrs. Vance, how do you plead to the charges?"
Evelyn's defense attorney leaned down, whispering urgently into her ear. Evelyn swallowed hard, her shoulders slumping in total defeat.
Evelyn: "Guilty, Your Honor..."
Judge Montgomery: "The court has reviewed the security footage. The actions shown on that recording are chilling, ruthless, and devoid of any basic human empathy."
Evelyn: "Your Honor, please! I was under immense emotional distress! I ask for leniency!"
Judge Montgomery: "Leniency is reserved for those who show remorse, Mrs. Vance. You attempted to end the life of a three-month-old infant for financial gain. I sentence you to twenty-five years at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice without the possibility of parole for twenty years."
Evelyn: "No! Twenty-five years?! Richard! Help me!"
Judge Montgomery: "Bailiffs, remove the prisoner immediately."
The bailiffs grabbed Evelyn by her orange sleeves, dragging her out through the side doors as she wept hysterically, her cries fading down the concrete hallway.
