Evelyn: "You heard me, Clara! Hand that baby over right now before I have the police haul you off this estate in handcuffs!"
Clara: "I tried to stop her... I tried to catch him..."
Evelyn: "You are an incompetent, clumsy little girl who can't even carry a infant down a simple flight of stairs without dropping him!"
Clara sat on the third marble step, her knees scraped and bleeding from her dive. She pulled the cotton blanket tighter around baby Liam, her whole body shaking violently as she pressed her cheek against his soft forehead.
Clara: "I didn't drop him... You held him out over the railing on purpose!"
Evelyn: "Shut your mouth! Who do you think my husband is going to believe? A filthy orphan maid we hired off the street, or his lawful wife?"
Clara: "Mr. Vance knows how much I care for Liam! I've stayed up with him every single night since his mother passed away!"
Evelyn: "And that makes you think you're important here? You are staff, Clara! You clean the toilets and scrub the floors! You don't have a voice in this family!"
Baby Liam: "WAH! WAH!"
Clara: "Shh, baby, it's okay... Clara's here. I won't let her hurt you."
Evelyn marched down three steps, her heavy burgundy gown rustling loudly against the white stone. Her diamond rings caught the bright Texas daylight as she reached out to grab Clara by her uniform collar.
Evelyn: "Give me the child! I will take him upstairs, and you will pack your ragged bags and get out of my mansion!"
Clara: "No! I won't let you touch him!"
Evelyn: "He is my stepson! I am his legal guardian when Richard is away on business!"
Clara: "You don't care about him! You just want his mother's inheritance money!"
Evelyn raised her right hand, her eyes flashing with dangerous fury as she prepared to strike Clara across the face again.
Evelyn: "Say another word about the money, and I'll make sure you never find a job in Dallas again!"
Clara: "Hit me all you want! I am not giving you this baby!"
Evelyn: "You little brat!"
Before Evelyn's hand could come down, the heavy double doors at the front entrance of the mansion burst open with a loud thud, revealing the afternoon sunlight.
Evelyn: "Richard! Oh, thank God you're back early!"
Richard Vance stood in the doorway, wearing a tailored black suit and a dark tie. His face was pale, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the scene unfolding on his grand staircase.
Richard: "What is going on in my home?!"
Evelyn: "Richard! It's terrible! Look what she did to your son!"
Evelyn instantly changed her voice, forcing tears into her eyes as she turned around and gestured wildly toward the stairs.
Evelyn: "She dropped him! I tried to catch him, Richard! She dropped little Liam on the stairs!"
Clara looked up from the steps, her voice cracking as she held the crying infant up toward the wealthy businessman.
Clara: "Mr. Vance... please..."
Evelyn: "Don't let her speak! She's lying! She nearly killed your only heir!"
