Three months later, the criminal trial concluded with brutal efficiency. The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes before returning a unanimous guilty verdict on all counts, including felony child abuse and aggravated assault.
The courtroom was packed as Judge Sterling prepared to deliver the final sentence.
Judge Sterling: "Evelyn Vance, your actions demonstrated a appalling lack of human empathy. You targeted a helpless infant and an elderly woman who was merely doing her duty to protect him."
Evelyn: "Please, Your Honor... I've never been in trouble before! Give me probation!"
Judge Sterling: "Probation would depreciate the seriousness of your atrocious conduct. On Count One, felony child abuse, you are sentenced to twelve years in state prison. On Count Two, aggravated assault, you are sentenced to three years, to be served consecutively."
Evelyn: "Fifteen years?! No! Marcus, help me!"
Marcus did not even look at her. He kept his eyes fixed forward, his heart entirely focused on the bright future awaiting his son.
The bailiffs handcuffed Evelyn once more, leading her away through the heavy steel doors to begin her fifteen-year prison sentence at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Outside the courthouse steps, a swarm of news reporters gathered around Marcus and Martha as they exited the building into the warm afternoon sun.
Reporter 1: "Mr. Vance! How do you feel about the fifteen-year sentence?"
Marcus: "Justice was served today for my son and for Martha. Our family can finally heal."
Reporter 2: "Martha, what do you have to say to other childcare workers facing domestic abuse?"
Martha: "Never stay silent. Speak up for the innocent, because every child deserves to be loved and protected."
Marcus placed a gentle arm around Martha's shoulder as they walked down the stone steps toward their waiting car, ready to leave the nightmare behind forever.
