A Peace Restored

Six months later, a warm spring breeze rustled the green leaves of the oak trees surrounding Mark and Claire's Dallas home.

The high-key sunlight reflected brightly off the white exterior walls and the pristine glass windows of the residence.

On the back patio, a small wooden crib sat under the shade of an umbrella, where baby Emma lay happily gurgling and reaching for a hanging mobile.

Claire sat in a plush armchair on the deck, sipping a cup of warm tea while reading a book.

Mark stepped out through the sliding glass doors carrying a tray of fresh fruit and sandwiches.

Mark: Fresh lunch for the most important woman in my life.

Claire: *smiling* Thank you, sweetie. You didn't have to make all of this.

Mark: I want to. I love taking care of you and Emma.

Mark set the tray on the outdoor table and sat on the wooden deck beside her chair, resting his arm on her knee.

Claire: Sarah called earlier. She said the foundation's new maternal health shelter opened downtown today.

Mark: The Claire Vance Maternal Support Center. It looks amazing on the news headlines.

Claire: It feels good knowing that other new mothers won't have to suffer without medical support or care.

Mark: You turned a nightmare into something that helps thousands of women, Claire. I am so proud of you.

The front doorbell rang softly inside the house, and Mark stood up to check his phone security app.

Claire: Who is it?

Mark: It's just the mail delivery. A letter from the state department of corrections.

Mark walked inside, retrieved the envelope from the front foyer console, and opened it near the pristine white wall.

It was a formal statement notifying them that Evelyn's first appeal for early parole had been denied unanimously by the board.

He folded the paper, slipped it into his desk drawer, and locked it away permanently.

He walked back out onto the sunny patio, pulling Claire close into his arms while looking down at little Emma sleeping peacefully in her crib.

Mark: Everything is secure, baby. Nobody is ever going to disturb our peace again.

Claire: I know, Mark. We built a real home here.

They stood together in the bright Texas daylight, holding each other tight as the quiet sounds of their baby's breathing filled the warm afternoon air.
