Two days later, the morning sun illuminated the executive boardroom on the top floor of the Vance Financial Tower in downtown Dallas.
A massive mahogany conference table was surrounded by eight corporate board members, all reading through printed legal transcripts.
At the far end of the table sat Evelyn Vance, wearing a sharp gray business suit, though her eyes were dark and tired.
Her lead defense attorney, Marcus Thorne, sat right beside her, shuffling through a stack of bail documents.
Evelyn: This whole situation is a minor domestic dispute that has been blown out of proportion by the press!
Board Member 1: A minor dispute, Evelyn? The local news channels are calling it 'The Dallas Mansion Cruelty Case'!
Evelyn: The media is exaggerating! My daughter-in-law is an ungrateful girl who wants to ruin my reputation!
Board Member 2: Evelyn, the police released the transcript of the security footage from inside your son's home!
Marcus Thorne: Gentlemen, my client has not been convicted of any crime yet. We are moving to suppress that video footage in court.
The double glass doors of the boardroom clicked open, and Mark walked into the room wearing a dark, tailored suit.
He carried a heavy black leather briefcase, setting it down firmly on the center of the mahogany table.
Evelyn: Mark! What are you doing here?! You have no seat on this board!
Mark: I hold thirty percent of the voting shares inherited from my father's trust, Evelyn. That gives me every right to attend an emergency board meeting.
Evelyn: You are betraying your own blood for that peasant girl you married!
Mark: That 'peasant girl' is my wife and the mother of my child. And today, I am removing you as chairwoman of this foundation.
Marcus Thorne: Mr. Vance, you don't have the majority vote to force a removal of the chairwoman.
Mark: I do now, Marcus. Uncle David and Aunt Patricia signed over their proxy voting rights to me an hour ago.
Evelyn’s face drained of color as she turned her head to look at the other board members sitting at the table.
Evelyn: David?! Patricia?! You gave your proxy votes to my son?!
Board Member 1: We cannot have the public face of Vance Financial facing felony charges for medical abuse and extortion, Evelyn.
Board Member 2: It's destroying our stock value. Our investors are pulling out of the real estate development fund as we speak.
Mark: I call for an immediate vote to remove Evelyn Vance from the executive board and strip her of all managerial authority over the family foundation.
Board Member 1: I second the motion.
Evelyn: You can't do this to me! I built this foundation after your father died!
Mark: All those in favor?
Every single board member around the table raised their hand, including her own legal counsel who slowly backed away from her chair.
Mark: Motion passed unanimously. You have two hours to clear your personal belongings out of the executive office, Evelyn.
Evelyn: Mark... please... you are my only son... You can't take everything away from me!
Mark: You took away my wife's dignity, her safety, and her prescription medicine while she bled on my kitchen floor.
Evelyn: I did it for the family!
Mark: No, you did it because you are a bully who thought she was untouchable. But you're touchable now, Evelyn.
Mark picked up his briefcase, turning toward the double doors without giving his crying mother a second glance.
Mark: The district attorney's office expects you in court on Monday morning. Don't be late.
