The red and blue emergency lights flashed through the high front windows of the living room.
Two uniformed Dallas police officers walked through the open front door, looking between the paramedics and the argument in the hallway.
Officer Davis: Who called for law enforcement assistance at this residence?
Mark: I did, Officer. My name is Mark Vance. I am the homeowner.
Evelyn: Officer, this is a private family misunderstanding! My son is under extreme stress due to the new baby!
Officer Davis: Ma'am, please step back and let the gentleman speak. Sir, what happened here?
Mark: My wife had a major surgical procedure four days ago. She was placed on strict bed rest by her doctors at Dallas General Hospital.
Officer Davis: Okay, go on.
Mark: My mother came into my home while I was at work, confiscated my wife's legal prescription medication, and forced her through physical coercion to perform heavy manual labor until she collapsed.
Evelyn: Coercion?! That is absurd! I didn't hold a weapon to her head!
Claire: *weakly* She told me... if I didn't cook... she would file a petition for emergency custody of my baby...
Officer Davis’s face hardened as he turned to look at Evelyn.
Officer Davis: Is that true, ma'am? Did you threaten her with custody action?
Evelyn: I am a trustee of the Vance Family Foundation! I have legal resources that this girl couldn't dream of!
Mark: She threatened a recovering mother to force her into compliance! And I have every single second of it recorded.
Evelyn froze, her cold expression faltering for the very first time.
Evelyn: Recorded? What are you talking about?
Mark: I installed high-definition interior security cameras in the living room and kitchen three weeks ago to monitor the baby's crib.
Evelyn: You... you put cameras in this house?!
Mark: Look up at the ceiling molding in the corner, Mother. Audio and video feed, streamed directly to my cloud server.
Mark pulled his smartphone out of his pocket and tapped the screen, turning the display toward Officer Davis.
Mark: Here is the footage from eleven o'clock this morning. Watch my mother take the medicine bottle off the counter while my wife is crying in pain.
Officer Davis leaned in, watching the crystal-clear video playing on the screen.
On the phone display, Evelyn could be heard speaking in a harsh, cold tone as Claire sobbed on the kitchen floor.
Evelyn's Voice On Video: "You don't get a single pill until the oven is set and the table is laid out for six guests. If you call Mark, I will have my lawyers draft custody papers before sunset."
Paramedic Mike: Officer, the patient's blood pressure is dangerously high, and her surgical site has re-opened due to severe physical strain. We need to transport her to the hospital immediately.
Officer Davis: Copy that, Mike. Get her loaded onto the gurney.
Mark: I'm going with you, Claire. Hold on, sweetheart.
Claire: The baby... Mark, don't leave our daughter here with her...
Mark: Never. My sister Sarah is pulling into the driveway right now to take care of the baby.
Officer Davis stepped toward Evelyn, unfastening a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical utility belt.
Officer Davis: Evelyn Vance, turn around and place your hands behind your back.
Evelyn: WHAT?! You are arresting ME?! I am the widow of Arthur Vance!
Officer Davis: You are being placed under arrest for elder and medical abuse, extortion, and theft of a controlled substance.
Evelyn: Mark! Tell this police officer to unhand me right now! I am your mother!
Mark: You aren't my mother anymore, Evelyn. You're just a criminal who hurt my family.
Evelyn: I will cut you out of the family trust fund! You won't get a single dollar of the inheritance!
Mark: Keep the money, Evelyn. You're going to need every penny of it for your defense lawyer.
The bailiff and officer escorted Evelyn out the front door in handcuffs just as Mark's sister Sarah rushed into the living room.
Sarah: Mark! I saw the police cars! Is Claire okay?!
Mark: She's going back into surgery to repair the stitches. Sarah, please guard my daughter. Don't let anyone from the Vance family near this house.
Sarah: I won't let anyone touch her, Mark. Go be with your wife!
Mark kissed his sleeping newborn daughter on the forehead, grabbed Claire's hand on the gurney, and walked out into the flashing red lights of the afternoon.
