The Shadow Beneath The Water

Jack: Mmmph!

Underneath the surface, muffled bubbles escaped Jack's mouth as he kicked with all his strength. The clear blue water swirled around him, but his eyes were locked on his terrified daughter, who was sinking rapidly toward the bottom filter grate.

Lily: Mmm-mmm!

Lily's tiny hands reached upward, her eyes wide with terror under the water as her white dress floated around her. Her giant teddy bear floated uselessly near the surface above them.

Jack sliced through the water, his fingers wrapping firmly around Lily's wrist. He yanked her into his chest, wrapping his left arm tightly around her waist. But just as he turned to kick back up toward the sunlight, the massive shadow in the water lunged forward.

The mechanical glass enclosure wall that separated the deep luxury pool from the estate's private saltwater aquarium display had somehow opened. A terrifying seven-foot shark darted through the dark gap, its row of razor-sharp teeth glinting through the clear water as it locked its gaze directly on the child's bright dress.

Jack: Nnngh!

Jack kicked his feet forcefully against the smooth pool wall, pushing himself and Lily sideways just as the shark's heavy jaws snapped shut right where they had been floating a fraction of a second prior.

The force of the creature's tail created a violent underwater current, pulling Jack backward. But he tightened his grip on Lily, using every ounce of air left in his lungs to propel them both straight up toward the sunlight.

Guest 2: Look! There they are! They're coming up!

Guest 3: Help them! Get the rescue hook!

Jack broke through the surface of the pool, gasping wildly for air as water poured down his face and black tuxedo jacket.

Jack: *Cough* *Gasp* I've got you, Lily! I've got you!

Lily: *Crying* *Gasping* Daddy! Daddy!

Jack: Grab the ledge, sweetie! Somebody grab her hand right now!

Two panicked guests leaned over the tiled edge, pulling the crying, shivering little girl out of the water and lifting her safely onto the concrete deck.

Guest 1: She's safe! She's breathing! Get a towel over her!

Jack hauled himself out of the pool, his wet black suit clinging to his frame, water dripping steadily onto the concrete. He fell to his knees beside his coughing daughter, wrapping his arms around her trembling body.

Jack: You're okay, baby... Daddy's here... you're safe now...

Lily: *Sobbing* Auntie Clara pushed me, Daddy... she threw my bear and pushed me in!

Jack froze. His chest stopped heaving, his jaw clenching so hard that the muscles in his face twitched violently. He looked up from his daughter, his eyes scanning the crowd until they locked onto Clara standing near the cabana with a glass of wine in her hand.

Clara: Oh, don't look at me like that, Jack! She tripped over her own shoes! You know how clumsy kids are!

Jack: She didn't trip, Clara.

Clara: I was just handing her the bear! It was an accident!

Jack stood up slowly from the wet deck, his dark eyes burning with an intense, lethal rage that made the surrounding guests step back in fear.
