Her Father Came Home to Save Her Life

General Marcus Vance stepped through the heavy oak doors of the luxury estate, his polished leather boots echoing against the white marble floor.

He had spent thirty years in the United States military, commanding soldiers across the globe, but nothing prepared him for the text message he had received an hour ago.

His daughter, Claire, had stopped answering her phone three days ago, leaving only a brief, scrambled voicemail that made his blood run cold.

Marcus: Grant! Where is my daughter?

Grant: General Vance? What are you doing here? You were supposed to be at the base in Virginia until next month.

Marcus: Move out of my way, Grant. I am not going to ask you a second time.

Evelyn: General Vance, please calm down. There is no need for this aggression in our home. Claire is just resting upstairs.

Marcus: She isn't answering her phone, Evelyn. That is not like her, and you know it.

Grant: She has been feeling under the weather, General. Being six months pregnant is hard on her body. She needs peace and quiet right now.

Marcus: Then she won't mind her father checking in on her.

Marcus brushed past Grant, pushing open the heavy wooden door to the master bedroom on the second floor, where the bright natural daylight poured in through the towering windows.

Claire lay still on the grand king-sized bed, her face turned toward the wall, her fair skin pale against the silk pillowcase.

Marcus: Claire? Sweetheart, it's Dad.

Claire shifted slowly, gasping softly as she tried to pull the heavy duvet higher over her chest.

Marcus walked over to the edge of the bed and gently pulled back the soft blanket, uncovering her bruised body.

A massive, deep purple bruise covered her right hip, stretching down toward her leg, and another dark mark stood out sharply against her left cheekbone.

Marcus: Who did this to you?

Grant: She fell in the bathroom!

Marcus: Claire, look at me. Did you fall?

Claire: No...

Marcus: Grant, step away from my daughter!

Grant: This is my house!

Claire: No... It's mine.

The room fell completely silent as Marcus turned his gaze back to his trembling daughter, realizing the nightmare she had been living in behind closed doors.
