The True Bride Revealed

Ethan pushed open the grand double doors of the luxury ballroom, stepping inside with Lily wrapped in his arms. The ambient chatter of two hundred wealthy guests suddenly drifted into a quiet hush as they noticed the groom holding a crying child, followed closely by a frantic bride in a torn veil.

Chloe's Mother: Chloe! What on earth is happening?! Why are you out of breath?!

Chloe: Mom, talk to Ethan! He's lost his mind! He's trying to cancel the entire wedding!

Chloe's Father: Cancel the wedding?! Are you insane, Ethan?! We have senators and corporate executives sitting in this room!

Ethan: Your daughter just locked my six-year-old child in a dark utility closet so she wouldn't ruin your photo opportunities.

A loud gasp rippled across the white ballroom. Guests exchanged shocked looks, while Chloe's mother stepped forward, her face turning bright red with embarrassment.

Chloe's Mother: That is a complete exaggeration! Chloe was just maintaining order before the ceremony started!

Ethan: Locking a child in a storage closet behind a deadbolt isn't maintaining order, Mrs. Vance. It's cruelty.

Chloe's Father: Lower your voice, Ethan! We can discuss this in the back study like civilized adults!

Ethan: There is nothing left to discuss, Mr. Vance. There will be no wedding today, and there will be no marriage contract.

Chloe: Ethan, please! We signed the prenuptial agreement yesterday! We spent months planning our life together in the new mansion!

Ethan: You wanted the mansion, Chloe. You wanted the trust fund and the family estate. You never wanted my daughter.

Chloe: That's not true! I tried to be a mother to her!

Lily: No, you didn't! You told me yesterday that when you married Daddy, you were going to send me to a boarding school in Europe!

The entire ballroom went completely dead silent. Chloe's father stared at his daughter, his jaw dropping open in total surprise.

Chloe's Father: Chloe... is that true? Did you tell that little girl she was being sent away?

Chloe: Father, it was just a suggestion! A boarding school would give her a better education! It would give Ethan and me space to start our own family!

Ethan: Lily is my family. She was my family before I met you, and she will be my family long after you are gone from my life.

Chloe's Mother: Ethan, think about your business partnership with my husband! You need our firm's backing for your real estate development project!

Ethan: I would rather lose every dollar in my bank account than let my daughter spend one night under the same roof as your daughter.

Ethan tossed the gold wedding ring onto the center table, right into the middle of a massive crystal vase filled with white roses. The heavy ring sank straight to the bottom with a clear, sharp clink.

Chloe: Ethan! You can't just leave me standing here in front of everyone!

Ethan: Watch me.
