Three days later, the morning sun shone brightly through the tall arched windows of the Dallas mansion living room.
The estate was quiet again. The gala decorations had been packed away, and the white marble floor glistened under the fresh morning light.
Julian sat at his mahogany desk, signing official documents alongside his estate attorney, Arthur Pendelton.
Arthur: That completes the formal revocation of all agreements associated with Vanessa Harrison, Julian. Her family's real estate firm has also severed ties with us to avoid further public scandal.
Julian: Good. I don't want her or her family ever stepping foot on my property again.
Arthur: The prosecutor assured me that with the video footage and the chemical evidence, she is looking at a minimum twenty-five-year sentence without parole for attempted capital murder.
Julian: She deserves every single day of that sentence.
A soft knock echoed at the door, and Clara stepped into the room wearing her simple white shirt and black trousers, holding a stack of clean linen napkins.
Clara: Excuse me, Mr. Sterling. I'm finishing up the inventory for the dining hall. Do you need anything else before I head home for the afternoon?
Julian: Clara, please, set those napkins down and come sit down. Arthur and I were just finishing up some important paperwork.
Clara: Oh, I don't want to interrupt your business meeting, sir.
Julian: You aren't interrupting at all. In fact, this meeting involves you directly.
Clara looked confused, setting the napkins on a small side table before stepping over to sit in the leather chair across from Julian's desk.
The red bruise on her cheek had faded into a soft yellowish mark, though it was still visible under the bright sunlight.
Julian: Clara, how long have you been working as a temporary server for our catering company?
Clara: About six months, sir. I work events on the weekends to help pay for my nursing school tuition at Dallas Community College.
Julian: Nursing school? What year are you in?
Clara: My second year. I have two more years left before I can take my board exams for my RN license.
Julian smiled warmly, sliding a crisp white envelope across the mahogany desk toward her hands.
Julian: Open it, Clara.
Clara picked up the heavy envelope, breaking the paper seal to reveal a formal legal letter stamped with the Sterling Trust seal.
Clara: What is this, Mr. Sterling?
Arthur: That is a full education grant issued directly by the Sterling Family Foundation, Clara. It covers your full tuition, books, housing, and living expenses for the remainder of your nursing degree.
Clara's eyes widened in complete disbelief as she read through the numbers typed on the official document.
Clara: Mr. Sterling... this... this is over fifty thousand dollars! I can't accept this from you!
Julian: You saved my life, Clara. Fifty thousand dollars is nothing compared to what you protected for me and my family.
Clara: I didn't save you for money, sir! I did it because it was the right thing to do!
Julian: I know you didn't. And that is precisely why you deserve it. A person with your integrity and bravery is going to make an incredible nurse one day.
Tears welled up in Clara's eyes once again, but this time they were tears of pure joy and relief as she held the document against her chest.
Clara: Thank you, Mr. Sterling... you have no idea how much stress this takes off my family's shoulders.
Julian: You will never have to worry about paying for your education again, Clara. That is my promise to you.
