The morning sun shone bright over a quiet residential street in Austin, Texas. A small white cottage with colorful flowers in the front yard stood beneath the shade of oak trees. Carter pulled his SUV up to the curb, his heart pounding against his ribs.
Lily sat in the backseat, wearing a bright yellow dress, holding her father's hand tightly.
Lily: "Is this Mommy's house?"
Carter: "Yes, baby. This is where she lives."
Carter stepped out of the vehicle, reaching back to help Lily down onto the pavement. Together, they walked up the short stone pathway toward the front porch. Carter raised his hand, his knuckles trembling as he knocked on the wooden door.
A few seconds later, the door swung open. A fair-skinned woman with soft brown hair and kind eyes stood in the doorway holding a sketchbook. Sarah looked up, her pencil dropping to the wooden porch floor as her eyes landed on Carter and the little girl standing beside him.
Sarah: "Carter...?"
Carter: "Sarah... oh God, Sarah..."
Sarah: "What are you doing here?! Evelyn told me if I ever came near Dallas, she would—"
Carter: "Evelyn is in jail, Sarah. She's never going to hurt anyone ever again."
Sarah gasped, her hands covering her mouth as tears welled up in her eyes. She looked down at Lily, who was peering out from behind Carter's legs.
Sarah: "Is that... is that my baby...?"
Carter: "This is Lily, Sarah. She knows the truth now."
Sarah: "Lily... oh, my sweet angel!"
Sarah dropped to her knees on the porch, opening her arms wide. Lily looked up at Carter, who gave her a gentle, encouraging nod. The little girl ran forward, throwing her arms around her mother's neck as they both broke into joyful sobs.
Sarah: "I never stopped thinking about you, Lily! Not for one single day!"
Lily: "Mommy! I found you!"
Carter: "I'm so sorry, Sarah... I'm so sorry I didn't see through Evelyn's lies sooner."
Sarah: "You're here now, Carter. That's all that matters."
