Justice In The Foyer

The distant sound of police sirens echoed down the long private driveway leading up to the Dallas mansion.

Brenda sprinted out of the second-floor office, running down the hall toward the grand staircase in a blind panic.

Brenda: Get out of my way! All of you!

She reached the top of the marble stairs, but as she took her first step down, three uniformed Dallas police officers walked through the grand double doors below, their hands resting on their holsters.

Officer Davis: Dallas Police! Nobody move!

Brenda stopped dead in her tracks on the staircase landing, looking down at the officers in utter terror.

Brenda: Officers! Thank God! My brother has gone crazy upstairs! He's holding me against my will!

Julian and Sarah walked down the grand stairs behind her, carrying the black binder and the handwritten letter.

Julian: Officer Davis, I am Julian Vance, the owner of this property. This woman broke into my house, assaulted my elderly mother, and attempted to steal legal documents from my private safe.

Brenda: He's lying! I'm a co-owner of this estate!

Sarah: She brought two men with iron tools to crack the safe, Officer. We have full security footage of them breaking through the study doors.

Eleanor rolled her electric wheelchair out from the living room, her voice steady and clear despite her frailty.

Eleanor: She threatened me, Officer. She told me my son was dead so I would give her my house.

Officer Davis looked up at Brenda with a stern, unforgiving expression.

Officer Davis: Brenda Vance, step down the stairs slowly with your hands where we can see them.

Brenda: You can't arrest me! I am a Vance! My father built half the commercial buildings in this city!

Officer Davis: Your last name doesn't give you permission to break into homes and assault senior citizens, ma'am. Walk down the stairs right now.

Brenda walked down the final steps, her head hanging low as Officer Davis grabbed her wrists, pulling them behind her back and snapping steel handcuffs over her hands.

Brenda: Julian! Please! Tell them to stop! Don't do this to your own sister!

Julian: You stopped being my sister the moment you raised your fist against my mother, Brenda.

Officer Davis: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law...

The officers led a weeping, screaming Brenda out through the double front doors, shoving her into the back seat of a waiting police cruiser as the flashing red and blue lights illuminated the high-key white driveway.
