Three months later, the bright morning sun filtered through the tall stained-glass windows of the county court house. Julian sat at the front table wearing a dark grey suit, holding Clara's hand as the judge adjusted his glasses at the bench.
Judge Vance: "In the matter of the State versus Evelyn Vance, the court has reviewed the security camera footage, the medical report, and the financial audit documents."
Evelyn sat across the aisle at the defense table, wearing a plain orange jumpsuit with her hands cuffed at her waist. She looked haggard, her hair dull and unstyled, her head hanging low.
Judge Vance: "The evidence of felony child abuse, domestic violence, and grand larceny is overwhelming and undisputed."
Evelyn: "Your Honor, please... I had severe emotional distress..."
Judge Vance: "Silence, defendant. You showed zero remorse while dragging a ten-year-old child across a stone floor, and you threatened her life on video recording."
Julian felt Clara squeeze his fingers, and he looked down, giving her an encouraging nod.
Julian: "You're doing great, Clara. Just hold on."
Judge Vance: "I hereby sentence you, Evelyn Vance, to fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of early parole. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued, effective immediately."
Evelyn burst into loud, desperate tears as the bailiff grabbed her arm to lead her through the side door.
Evelyn: "Julian! Please! Don't let them lock me up! Clara, tell him you forgive me!"
Clara stood tall beside her father, looking straight at Evelyn without a single tear in her eyes.
Clara: "I don't have to listen to you anymore."
The heavy metal doors clicked shut, cutting off Evelyn's cries completely. The courtroom fell silent, and Judge Vance brought his wooden gavel down with a firm strike.
Judge Vance: "Court is adjourned. Mr. Vance, you and your daughter are free to go."
Julian stood up, pulling Clara into a warm hug before picking her up into his arms.
Julian: "It's officially over, sweetheart. She's gone."
Clara: "Can we go home now, Daddy?"
Julian: "Yes, baby girl. Let's go home."
They walked out of the courthouse together into the warm afternoon sunshine, where the air was fresh and clear. Outside, the world was moving on, and for the first time in three years, the Vance estate was finally filled with peace.
