The cold marble floor of the Vance estate echoed with the terrifying sound of harsh scraping and desperate sobbing. Clara held her arms over her face as her stepmother pulled her across the grand hall by her golden ponytail, showing no mercy.
Evelyn: "Get out of this house, right now!"
Clara: "Daddy, please! Help me!"
Evelyn: "Your father isn't here to protect you today! You are a useless little leech!"
Clara's knees slammed against the polished stone, leaving red streaks along her skin. She reached out her small hands, trying desperately to find a handhold on the smooth edge of the marble pillars under the bright daylight.
Evelyn: "Shut up! Stop crying before I give you a real reason to scream!"
Clara: "Please, stop! You're hurting me!"
Evelyn: "You don't belong in this family, and you sure as hell don't belong in this mansion!"
Evelyn yanked harder on the little girl's hair, forcing Clara to kick her legs wildly against the floor in pure agony. Her pale white dress was already stained with dust and tears as she was dragged toward the front entrance.
Evelyn: "I am throwing your bags into the street, and you are going with them!"
Clara: "Daddy! Please come home!"
Evelyn: "He doesn't care about you! He's fifty miles away in the city!"
Suddenly, the massive double entrance doors slammed open with a deafening crash, hitting the interior walls so hard the heavy brass lamps trembled. Julian Vance stood in the doorway, his dark navy suit unbuttoned, his face pale with sudden, terrifying fury.
Julian: "Hey! Stop!"
Evelyn froze mid-stride, her hand still clutching the young girl's hair tightly. Clara let out a weak sob, raising her tear-stained face toward the entrance as her father took his first step inside.
Clara: "Daddy..."
Julian dropped his leather briefcase onto the floor and bolted across the room. He didn't even look at Evelyn as he dropped heavily onto his knees right beside his weeping daughter.
Julian: "Clara! Sweetheart, look at me!"
Clara: "Daddy... she hurt me!"
Julian pulled Clara close into his chest, wrapping his strong arms around her trembling shoulders to protect her from the cold air. Beside them, the massive American flag hung silently against the high wall, framing the terrible scene in the high-key light of the foyer.
Julian: "I've got you. I've got you, baby girl. Nobody is ever going to touch you again."
He lifted his head slow and steady, his dark eyes locking onto Evelyn with absolute hatred. He stood up in one fluid motion, standing tall between his crying child and the woman he had married three years ago.
Julian: "How dare you touch my daughter!"
Evelyn: "Julian! It's not what it looks like! She was being completely disobedient!"
Without saying another word, Julian stepped forward and raised his right hand. He brought it down in a sharp, blinding motion, slapping Evelyn forcefully across the face. The loud crack echoed through the vast hall, sending Evelyn tumbling backward onto the hard floor. She landed on her hip, clutching her red, swollen cheek in complete terror as Julian pointed a finger down at her face, his voice cold enough to freeze the room solid.
Julian: "You are finished in this family!"
Evelyn lay on the floor, gasping for air as her eyes darted toward the open front doors, realizing that the life of luxury she had spent years building was about to crash down around her in a single morning.
