Julian was cornered, his reputation destroyed in front of the most influential people in the city. The arrogance that he had carried throughout the evening completely vanished, replaced by wild panic as he realized the severe legal consequences waiting for him.
Arthur Pendelton pulled out his smartphone and made a quick call directly to the city police chief, who happened to be attending another event just down the street. Within less than ten minutes, the sharp red and blue lights of police cruisers flashed through the grand arched windows of the estate.
Two uniform police officers entered the ballroom, walking straight toward the elevated stage where Julian was still sputtering excuses.
Officer: Julian Vance, we have a warrant to hold you pending a full investigation into grand larceny and fraud regarding the Thomas Vance estate.
Julian: This is a massive misunderstanding! You can't do this at my own gala!
The officers placed handcuffs around Julian's wrists, leading him away down the long marble hallway while the entire room watched in absolute silence. As he passed his niece, Julian looked at her with bitter eyes, but Maya simply sat tall on the back of the stallion, her face perfectly calm and peaceful.
Arthur Pendelton stepped up beside the black horse, looking up at Maya with a gentle, reassuring smile on his face.
Arthur: Maya, your father was a good man, and he loved you more than anything in this world. I promise you that my firm will personally ensure every single dollar, every piece of land, and every animal is returned to you immediately.
Maya: Thank you, Mr. Pendelton. I just wanted Shadow to come back home.
The crowd broke into a sudden, overwhelming round of applause, clapping wildly for the young girl who had shown more courage and strength than anyone in the room. Guests cheered as Maya gently patted the black horse on the neck, leaning down to whisper soft words into his ear.
Shadow walked smoothly out of the ballroom, leaving behind the fake luxury and greed of Julian's party. Outside, under the bright night sky, the fresh air smelled clean and open. For the first time in five long years, Maya was free, her father's name was restored, and her best friend was right by her side, ready to go home.
