The room instantly exploded into chaotic shouting and intense whispers. Among the wealthy guests were prominent judges, local district attorneys, and influential corporate leaders who had known Thomas Vance for decades. They looked at Julian with fresh eyes, realizing that something deeply wrong had taken place behind closed doors after his brother's passing.
A tall man with gray hair and a sharp navy suit stepped forward from the front row of the crowd. It was Arthur Pendelton, the senior partner of the city's top estate law firm and a former close friend of Thomas Vance.
Arthur: Julian, what is this child talking about? Thomas's estate was settled years ago!
Julian: She's just a confused kid, Arthur! She doesn't know what she's talking about! Guards, get her out of here right now!
Two large security guards in black suits moved toward Maya, but Shadow raised his front legs high into the air, letting out a loud, terrifying roar that sent the guards scrambling backward in terror. The horse landed smoothly on all four hooves, standing like a solid wall of iron in front of the young girl.
Maya reached inside the small cloth bag slung over her shoulder. She pulled out a faded leather-bound notebook and a thick stack of folded legal papers tied together with a simple red string.
Maya: My dad kept a log of every horse he bought, every dollar he spent, and every contract he signed. And his real lawyer signed this copy of his trust fund instructions three days before he died!
She tossed the bundle of papers directly toward Arthur Pendelton. The senior lawyer caught the documents in mid-air, unfolding them quickly as he pulled his reading glasses from his coat pocket.
Arthur: This has the official seal of the state probate court. Julian, you told the probate court that these records were destroyed in a fire at the ranch!
Julian: That's a fake! She forged those documents! She's ten years old, for heaven's sake!
Maya: I didn't forge anything. My mom hid them in the barn before you evicted us from our house!
The guests turned toward Julian, their expressions turning from amusement to utter disgust. The atmosphere in the grand ballroom shifted completely from a party to a public courtroom. Julian backed up against the main stage, looking around desperately for someone to take his side, but every guest stepped away, leaving him standing completely alone under the harsh spotlights.
Arthur: This document clearly states that Maya is the sole heir to the entire Vance enterprise, including the trust fund, the land, and every single animal on the property. Julian was only supposed to manage the funds until she turned eighteen, without selling a single piece of property!
Julian: You can't prove any of this in front of these people!
Maya: The papers prove everything, Uncle Julian. You never told them who I really am because you were terrified of the day I would grow up and come back for what was mine.
