The giant horse lowered his massive head until his nose pressed directly into the center of Maya's small palm. The crowd gasped in total disbelief. The same stallion that had bucked violently against three grown men earlier that day was now standing completely still, letting out a low, soft sigh that sounded almost like a whisper of relief.
Maya gently rubbed the white patch of fur right between the stallion's eyes, exactly where her father had taught her to touch him years ago. Shadow closed his eyes, leaning his heavy head against her shoulder as if he were a gentle dog coming home after a long journey.
Julian: What kind of trick is this? Did you feed him something?
Maya: Horses don't forget the people who loved them, Julian. You never learned that because you only care about money.
Julian's face flushed deep red with embarrassment. He stepped forward angrily, his leather shoes squeaking on the slick floor, but Shadow instantly snapped his head up and let out a fierce, warning snort, stomping one heavy hoof directly in front of Julian's toes.
Julian jumped backward, stumbling into a table covered with champagne glasses, sending two crystal flutes crashing to the floor. The sound echoed wildly through the silent ballroom.
Maya: Stand back. He doesn't like loud noises, and he certainly doesn't like you.
Without needing a mounting block or help from anyone, Maya grabbed a handful of the horse's coarse dark mane. She pulled herself up with incredible grace and agility, swinging her right leg cleanly over the stallion's back. She sat high on the unbridled horse, holding onto his mane with calm confidence that stunned every single person watching from the edges of the room.
Shadow did not buck. He did not jump or toss his head. He simply turned his body smoothly, aligning himself perfectly with his young rider as if they were a single animal moving across the floor.
Guest: She isn't even using a saddle or a bridle! How is she controlling him?
Maya: Walk, Shadow.
With a simple touch of her heels against his sides, the massive stallion stepped forward into a gentle, elegant walk. They moved in a perfect circle around the marble floor, weaving past the white columns and beneath the twinkling lights. The guests watched in absolute awe, stepping back to clear a wide path for the young girl and her giant companion.
Maya turned the horse around to face the main elevated platform where Julian was standing, shaking with anger and humiliation.
Maya: You offered a million dollars to anyone who could ride him. The money belongs to my father's estate, doesn't it?
Julian: You don't get a single penny! This whole thing is an illegal setup!
Maya: The only illegal thing in this room is what you did to my father's will, Uncle Julian.
