Cleaning Up the Past

A Wealthy Heir Defends His Maid and Fires His Cruel Bride

Once the sound of Evelyn’s car engine faded away down the long driveway, David turned his attention back to Sarah. The maid was still trembling slightly, her hands wrapped tightly in her white apron. She looked down at the broken glass near her feet, instantly feeling the urge to grab a broom and clean up the mess. It was her natural habit to serve, to take care of things, and to keep the peace no matter what happened around her. But before she could reach for the dustpan under the counter, David gently caught her arm.

David: Don't touch that, Sarah. Let me handle the mess this time.

Sarah: Oh no, Mr. David, that is my job. You shouldn't be cleaning wine off the floor.

David: I mean it. Sit down on the chair over there and rest for a minute.

Sarah: I am so sorry for bringing drama into your house today...

David: You didn't bring any drama here, Sarah. You showed me who she really was.

David walked over to the closet near the pantry, pulled out a broom, a dustpan, and a bundle of paper towels. He walked back to the spot where the glass had shattered and knelt down on the hardwood floor himself. Without a second thought for his expensive suit, he began carefully sweeping up the sharp crystal shards and wiping away the dark red stains. Sarah watched him in awe, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief wash over her body. For six long months, she had lived in fear of coming to work everyday, dreading Evelyn’s cruel games and constant threats to fire her.

As David worked, he spoke to Sarah in a warm, calm tone, asking her details about how long Evelyn had been treating her this way. Sarah hesitated at first, not wanting to sound like she was complaining, but David encouraged her to speak the complete truth. She explained how Evelyn would hide valuable items and accuse her of stealing, how she made her clean the same floor three times in a row, and how she constantly reminded her that she was nothing compared to the rich family line. David listened quietly, his jaw tightening with every word she spoke.

David: I am so deeply sorry, Sarah. I should have paid closer attention to what was happening in my own home.

Sarah: You were busy running the entire business, Mr. David. You couldn't have known.

David: That is no excuse. A leader is responsible for protecting everyone under his roof.

Sarah: She was very clever about it. She only acted mean when you were away at work.

David: Well, her disguise failed today. And she will never step foot on this property again.

David threw the paper towels and glass into the trash bin and washed his hands thoroughly at the sink. He grabbed a clean towel, dried his hands, and walked over to sit across from Sarah at the wooden kitchen island. He looked at her tired, weathered face and remembered how she used to bring him hot soup when he was a young boy studying for his business degree. She had been a constant, faithful presence in his life through every family tragedy and success. He realized then that true loyalty could never be bought with money or high social status.
