The sun was shining brightly over the long driveway of the grand estate on a quiet Tuesday morning. Sarah walked up the stone steps carrying her server apron and her small bag of utility tools for the morning shift. She had worked as a catering waitress for three years, taking extra hours to support her younger sister through college.
The mansion belonged to a rich local businessman named Richard Vance. Richard was known throughout the county for his large corporate acquisitions and his high-profile public life. To the outside world, he lived in complete comfort with his young wife and newly born twin babies. Today, he was hosting an early morning meeting with a group of high-powered divorce lawyer specialists and real estate investors.
Sarah entered through the side service entrance near the kitchen. The head chef was rushing around arranging silver trays, fresh coffee, and expensive pastries. He pointed toward the back stairs and asked Sarah to check the upstairs linen closets for fresh table napkins. Sarah nodded politely and headed up the quiet staircase, holding a ring of master keys given to her by the estate manager.
As Sarah walked down the long second-floor hallway, the bright natural daylight flooded through the large glass windows. Everything seemed quiet, clean, and elegant. However, as she passed a set of white double doors at the far end of the hall, she heard a strange noise. It was a very quiet sound, like a soft creaking rope followed by a tiny gasp.
Sarah stopped in her tracks and turned her head toward the door. She leaned her ear closer against the thick polished wood to listen carefully. From inside the room, a faint female voice spoke out in a soft, trembling whisper.
Mother: Please keep your voice down... they just fell asleep...
Sarah felt her heart skip a beat. She tried the heavy brass handle, but the door was locked tight from the outside. Something was very wrong inside this bedroom. She looked down at the master key ring in her hand and searched for the key that matched the old-style lock.
She slipped the key into the brass keyhole and turned it until it made a sharp clicking sound. She pushed the double doors open slowly to see what was happening. What she saw inside the bright, sunlit master bedroom shocked her to her core.
