The grand ballroom in downtown Dallas was filled with bright natural light coming through the massive arched windows. Sparkling glass chandeliers glittered overhead, casting soft golden reflections across high white walls. More than a hundred rich guests walked across polished marble floors, sipping crystal glasses of chilled champagne. Everyone in the room belonged to top society, wearing expensive suits and silk gowns. At the center of attention stood Victoria, dressed in a custom emerald green gown. The custom dress cost more than most working families earned in a whole year. Victoria was celebrating her thirtieth birthday party with total elegance. The multi-million-dollar event was funded by her family's long-standing Texas real estate trust fund.
Guest 1: Happy birthday, Victoria! This gala is absolutely breathtaking.
Victoria: Thank you, darling. My husband made sure every single detail was perfect.
Guest 2: You really have the perfect life, Victoria. The mansion, the estate, everything.
Victoria: I work very hard to keep our family legacy intact.
A young catering maid walked carefully through the heavy crowd carrying a heavy silver tray. Her hands shook slightly from holding six tall champagne glasses for hours. She took another careful step through the tight group of guests near the main table. Suddenly, a tall man in a navy suit backed up without looking back. His elbow hit the maid's shoulder with sudden force, sending her off balance. The silver tray tilted sharply to the side in an instant. Cold champagne splashed across the back of Victoria's designer green dress, soaking the expensive silk instantly.
Victoria: Ugh! What on earth is wrong with you?!
Victoria turned around fast, her face burning red with deep anger. She did not even look at the girl's face before raising her right hand. A hard slap echoed loudly across the suddenly quiet ballroom. Guests gasped in total shock as the sharp sound cut through the soft background music. The maid stumbled backward against a table, holding her red, bruised cheek. Tears filled her eyes as she looked down at the marble floor.
Victoria: Look at what you did to my dress! You clumsy, worthless fool!
Maid: I'm... I'm so sorry, ma'am...
Victoria: Get out of my sight before I have security throw you onto the street!
The young woman slowly looked up through her tears, her trembling lips showing deep pain. She looked directly into Victoria's eyes without turning away.
Maid: Happy birthday, sister.
Victoria stopped instantly, her raised hand freezing in mid-air. Her heart felt like it dropped into her stomach as cold fear washed over her. She stared at the young girl's face, suddenly noticing small freckles on her nose. Her voice lost all of its former anger as a strange chill filled the air.
Victoria: What... what did you just call me?
Lily: I said happy birthday, Victoria. You're thirty today.
Victoria: Who told you my name? Who paid you to say that?!
Lily: Nobody paid me. I've been looking for you for fifteen years.
Victoria: This is a sick joke! Security! Get this crazy woman out of here!
Lily: Look at my wrist, Victoria! Look at the scar!
The young maid pulled back the sleeve of her black catering uniform with shaking fingers. Right above her wrist point was a thin, crescent-shaped mark on her skin. Victoria stared down at the mark, her breath catching violently in her dry throat. Forgotten memories from childhood flooded into her head all at once. She remembered a tiny girl who had the exact same mark on her small wrist. She remembered holding that same hand when they slept in cold orphanage beds long ago.
Victoria: No... no, that's impossible. My sister died in the house fire.
Lily: I didn't die in the fire, Tori. Uncle Harrison lied to you.
