Scattered Papers On Marble Stairs

A Mother Runs Down Marble Steps To Save Her Daughter

The morning sun beamed down bright and hot over the city of Dallas, lighting up the grand white marble entrance of the federal courthouse. Sarah held the thick manila folder tight against her chest as her heart hammered in her ribs. Inside those pages was the final adoption paper that proved her legal right to her six-year-old daughter, Emily. For three long years, her former boss, Victoria Vance, had tried to strip her custody away using fake legal filings and heavy corporate pressure. Victoria was a powerful real estate mogul who believed money could buy any judge or police report in the state of Texas.

Sarah took a deep breath, her hands shaking as she pulled her maroon dress straight and prepared to walk into the clerk office. Suddenly, the brass heavy doors swung open at the top of the steps. Victoria Vance walked out, flanked by two expensive corporate lawyers in dark gray suits. Victoria wore a bright yellow fitted gown that screamed wealth and total authority. Her dark eyes locked onto Sarah with absolute coldness. She held a fresh court injunction in her gloved hand, signed by a corrupt associate judge just ten minutes earlier.

Victoria: You are too late, Sarah. The judge signed the temporary custody transfer to my legal guardianship five minutes ago.

Sarah: That is impossible! The hearing is scheduled for two o'clock today!

Victoria: I moved it up. My lawyers know how to get things done while poor mothers sleep. Hand Emily over by noon, or the police will arrest you for kidnapping.

Sarah gasped in deep horror, her vision blurring with instant tears. She backed away from the top landing, her heels clicking fast against the smooth white floor. She turned around and began to run down the grand outdoor staircase, desperate to reach her car and drive straight to her daughter primary school. The wind whipped her long brown hair across her face as she hurried down the steep marble steps, her lungs burning with frantic fear. Her foot caught the sharp edge of a marble step, making her lose her balance completely.

Sarah: No! Help me!

She tumbled backward down the steps, her red dress flying as the manila folder slipped from her fingers. Dozens of legal documents, birth certificates, and financial receipts scattered wildly into the clear Texas sky, floating down like white leaves over the stairs. Sarah braced for the hard impact against the cold stone, closing her eyes in sheer terror. But instead of slamming into the sharp steps, a pair of strong, muscle-bound arms caught her firmly in mid-air. David Sterling, a former high-ranking state prosecutor and current head of a private investigative firm, held her tight against his chest.

David: I caught you! I have you, Sarah! Take a breath!

Sarah: Please! Save my child! Protect my child!

David looked down at Sarah weeping hysterically in his arms, her hands clutching his dark suit jacket so tight her knuckles turned white. He looked up the grand staircase and spotted Victoria standing near the top, a sharp cruel smile spread across her red lips. David felt an intense rage ignite deep within his chest. He knew Victoria had crossed every line, but threatening a loving mother and forging state legal papers crossed the line into total crime. David set Sarah gently on her feet, holding her shoulder steady while gathering his own composure.

David: Stay behind me, Sarah. Nobody is taking Emily away today.
