Ten minutes later, the quiet suburban neighborhood echoed with the sound of approaching police sirens. Two black-and-white police cruisers pulled up the long circular driveway of the Vance mansion, stopping right in front of the grand entrance. Four uniform officers stepped out, led by Captain Miller, a long-time acquaintance of Arthur's late father.
Eleanor was dragging two large suitcases down the front stairs, trying to make a quick exit before things got worse. But as soon as she opened the front doors, she was met by the police officers standing on the wide stone porch under the bright morning sun.
Captain Miller: Eleanor Vance? Step away from those bags and put your hands behind your back.
Stepmother: What is the meaning of this? I am the lady of this house! My husband hit me!
Captain Miller: We have already reviewed the security footage provided by your husband's legal team. You pushed two young children onto a hard floor and threatened them. You are under arrest for child endangerment and assault.
Eleanor's face turned completely pale as the silver handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. Her expensive metallic gold dress looked ridiculous as she was forced down the front stone steps in front of the neighbors who were stepping out onto their lawns to watch the drama unfold. She screamed and yelled, trying to fight against the officers, but they held her firmly and placed her into the back seat of the police cruiser.
Arthur stood by the large front window with Leo and Maya, watching the police car drive away down the gated driveway. The threat that had hung over their family for six months was finally gone forever. The kids squeezed their father's hands tightly, feeling a massive wave of relief wash over them.
Maya: Is she really gone dad?
Father: She is gone sweetheart. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or scare you in this house again.
Leo: Thanks for protecting us dad.
Arthur knelt down and hugged both of his children tightly under the warm sunlight filling the living room. That afternoon, Arthur signed the final legal paperwork revoking Eleanor's access to all family bank accounts, trust funds, and credit lines. The court judge granted a permanent restraining order and denied Eleanor any financial settlement due to her documented criminal actions against the minors.
