Mark gripped the leather steering wheel of his truck as rain splashed against the windshield.
He was driving back from an out-of-town job site that finished earlier than expected.
His six-year-old daughter Lily had asked him to bring home her favorite chocolate cookies.
Mark smiled quietly to himself while thinking about how happy she would be to see him.
He pulled his truck into the long gravel driveway of his suburban home.
The house stood quiet against the gray afternoon sky with all the window shades drawn tight.
Mark turned off the ignition and stepped out into the damp cool air.
He carried his heavy toolbox in one hand and a bag of warm cookies in the other.
He walked up the front steps and reached into his coat pocket for his house keys.
When he put the key into the deadbolt, he noticed the door was already unlocked.
He pushed the heavy wooden door open and stepped inside the front entry hall.
The foyer felt unusually cold and completely silent as he stepped onto the rug.
Mark: Hello? Lily, I came home early!
No one answered his call from the living room or the kitchen area.
Mark dropped his heavy toolbox near the front coat rack with a dull thud.
He walked toward the center of the hallway and looked up the stairs.
His wife Evelyn was standing on the landing wearing a long silk robe.
She gasped loudly and clutched the railing with both of her pale hands.
Evelyn: Mark! What are you doing back right now?
Mark: My client canceled the afternoon meeting so I rushed back home.
Evelyn took a quick step backward away from the top stair ledge.
Her face looked unusually pale under the bright hallway chandelier lights.
Evelyn: You were supposed to stay in the city until tomorrow morning.
Mark: Why do you look so startled to see your husband home?
Evelyn: I was just taking a quiet nap because I had a headache.
Mark looked around the main floor trying to find his little daughter.
Mark: Where is Lily? Is she upstairs in her bedroom?
Evelyn: Yes, she is fast asleep in her bed right now.
Mark noticed a strange silver trunk sitting near the staircase table.
The large metallic box had heavy latches and strong metal corners on every side.
It was normally kept deep inside the back hallway closet upstairs.
Mark: Why is this heavy silver trunk standing in the hallway?
Evelyn: I was cleaning out some old blankets to donate to charity.
Mark stepped closer to the silver trunk sitting on the dark floorboards.
A soft metallic rattling sound came from inside the locked metal box.
Mark stopped walking and stared directly at the silver latches.
Mark: Did you hear that noise coming from inside this box?
Evelyn: It was probably just the heating pipes under the house floor.
Mark knelt down on the wooden floor right beside the metallic case.
He placed his warm palm against the cool silver surface of the trunk.
He heard a tiny gasp coming from deep within the locked enclosure.
His heart started pounding wildly inside his chest as panic took hold.
Mark: Lily? Are you inside there?
