Mark walked briskly toward the central staircase, his thick leather dress shoes echoing loudly against the polished white marble floors. The soft crying grew louder with every step he took, instantly turning his calm mood into deep anxiety. He rounded the corner and looked up toward the sweeping curved balcony above.
On the grand curved staircase, the elderly housekeeper Martha stood in her grey uniform, holding Lily firmly by her small arms. Lily wore a white dress, her small face completely red and stained with hot tears. Standing higher up on the stairs, looking down cold and unimpressed, was Victoria, dressed in a sweeping white evening gown. Victoria's arms were folded tightly across her chest as she watched the crying child without a single trace of sympathy in her eyes.
Little Girl: Daddy, please tell her to stop!
Lily's sharp, tearful scream echoed through the high ceilings of the house, striking Mark directly in the heart. The raw fear in his daughter's voice was something Mark had never heard before in his entire life. His blood ran cold as he realized Lily was not just throwing a tantrum; she was genuinely terrified and pleading for protection.
Mark did not hesitate for another second. He dropped his briefcase and the bakery box straight onto the polished floor. Furious anger boiled up inside his chest as he rushed forward toward the bottom of the grand stairs, his boots slapping hard against the stone steps. His eyes were locked on Martha's hands holding his trembling little girl.
Swooping in with urgent strength, Mark scooped Lily out of the housekeeper's grip, pulling her into a tight, protective embrace against his chest. Lily immediately wrapped her small arms around her father's neck, sobbing hysterically into his black suit jacket. Her small frame shook with heavy gasps of air as she buried her face in his shoulder.
Mark turned furiously toward Martha, his face flushed red with intense rage. He stood tall, towering over the shaking elderly worker while holding his weeping daughter securely in his left arm.
Father: Who gave you permission to touch her?!
Martha flinched backwards against the dark wooden banister, her hands trembling violently in front of her gray apron. Her pale face turned ghostly white as she looked from the furious father up toward the wealthy woman standing higher on the steps.
Housekeeper: I was just following orders!
Father: What orders?! Speak right now!
Housekeeper: Mrs. Victoria told me to take her to the guest room upstairs immediately!
Mark stared at the housekeeper in complete disbelief. His head whipped upward toward Victoria, who stood three steps higher, her expression shifting rapidly from cold disdain to fake, sweet concern. The peaceful life Mark thought he built was crumbling right before his eyes on his own front stairs.
