An hour later, Mark was sitting at his office desk downstairs in the study.
He had called his long-time family attorney, Mr. David Harrison, right away.
David listened carefully to every single detail of the morning's awful events.
David: You did the right thing by keeping the letter, Mark.
Mark: Is that letter legally useful for the custody hearing, David?
David: It shows a clear attempt at severe emotional manipulation of a child.
Mark: I want to make sure she can never touch Lilly's trust fund.
David: We will file for an emergency court injunction on the estate fund today.
Mark took a deep breath of genuine relief for the first time that day.
He knew the legal process would be long and very stressful for everyone.
But he was fully ready to fight with everything he owned for Lilly.
David promised to prepare all the emergency court paperwork within two hours.
Mark: Thank you for helping us so quickly today, David.
David: Protect your daughter and let me handle the legal matters now.
Mark hung up the office phone and leaned back in his leather chair.
He looked at the small photo frame sitting on the corner of his desk.
It showed Lilly smiling brightly on her seventh birthday at the city park.
He promised himself that he would bring that genuine smile back to her face.
He walked out of his office and went back upstairs to check on her.
Lilly was standing near her bedroom window, looking down at the quiet street.
Mark stepped into the soft room and pulled a chair next to her.
Mark: How are you feeling right now, my sweet Lilly?
Lilly: Is Mommy ever coming back to live with us again?
Mark: No, she will live somewhere else from now on, sweetie.
Lilly: Will I still get to see her sometimes later?
Mark: Only when you feel completely safe and comfortable to do so.
Lilly leaned her tired head against Mark's warm shoulder with a sigh.
Lilly: I like it better when it is just you and me, Daddy.
Mark: We are going to be totally fine together, I promise you.
Mark held her tiny hand in his own large palm very gently.
He knew the days ahead would require immense patience and constant love.
He was completely ready to give her all the care she deserved in life.
