The courtroom was quiet except for the quiet hum of the air conditioner.
Judge Harris sat behind the high wooden bench reviewing the legal case file.
Mark and Sarah sat together at the petitioner table with Arthur beside them.
Richard sat across the aisle with his own attorney whispering in his ear.
Judge Harris: We are here regarding the emergency petition for temporary guardianship of Mia.
Arthur: Your Honor, the Miller family has provided a safe home for Mia.
Arthur: They have established a strong emotional bond with the child.
Richard's attorney stood up quickly to address the bench.
Attorney: Your Honor, my client is the biological uncle and legal kin.
Attorney: The law clearly prioritizes biological family placement over non-relatives.
Judge Harris: Normally that is true, counsel, but I have a social worker report here.
Judge Harris adjusted his reading glasses and picked up a stapled document.
Judge Harris: The report indicates that Mr. Richard failed two previous home checks.
Richard shifted uncomfortably in his leather chair and looked down at his shoes.
Judge Harris: Furthermore, the report states that he attempted to claim her trust fund allowance.
Mark squeezed Sarah's hand under the wooden table as the judge spoke.
Sarah: He only wanted her money, Mark.
Mark: The judge sees the truth now.
Judge Harris: Mr. Richard, do you have any response to these findings?
Richard opened his mouth to speak, but his lawyer quickly patted his arm.
Attorney: No statement at this time, Your Honor.
Judge Harris: Child welfare requires us to place the interest of the child first.
Judge Harris: The court finds that the Miller residence provides stability, care, and safety.
Judge Harris picked up his wooden gavel and struck the sound block firmly.
Judge Harris: I am granting temporary legal custody of Mia to Mark and Sarah Miller.
A wave of relief washed over Sarah as tears streamed down her cheeks.
Mark let out a long breath he felt like he had been holding all day.
Mark: Thank you, Your Honor.
Richard grabbed his briefcase angrily and walked out of the courtroom doors.
Arthur turned around and shook hands warmly with both Mark and Sarah.
Arthur: You did it, my friends. She is safe with you now.
Sarah: I cannot wait to go home and tell the girls.
They gathered their belongings and walked out into the warm Texas afternoon sunshine.
The shadow of fear was finally gone from their family home.
